COASTING-SLED.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,494, dated November 20, 1894. Application filed March 30,1894- Serlal No, 505,792. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES H. HOLT, of Fairfield Centre, in the county of Somerset, State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coasting-Sleds, of which the following is a description sufiiciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the aocompanyingdrawings, forminga part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved coasting sled; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a transverse section taken on line, a, w, in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 a plan view of the hanger.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

My invention relates especially to an improvement in steering devices for coasting sleds; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simple, cheap and effective article of this character.

The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.

In the drawings, A represents the body of the sled which comprises two runners, b, b, of ordinary shape connected by cross-bars, f. Centrally between said cross-bars there is a horizontal bar, g, fitted to rock in said runners, said bar being held by split pins, cl. The seat, B, is secured by bolts, 2', to a block, j,

' mounted on said rocking bar. The forward end of the seat is reduced in breadth and projected at, It, beyond the toe of the runners. The casting, m, is bolted to the under face of said elongated portion and a bolt, 19, is pendent centrally therefrom. On said bolt'a circular hanger, O, is fitted to rotate and is held by a nut, q, disposed between arms or ribs, 7', on said hanger. A steering runner, H, is pivoted to rock vertically on a bolt, 25, held by a split pin, 1;, in the arms, a", of said hanger. In convenient position beyond the forward end of the seat a cross-bar or handle, 10, is secured to the steering runner, H.

In the use of my improvement the sled is employed in the ordinary manner. The occu pant can either place his feet on the bar, to, and by turning the steering runner, H, thereby can guide the sled in any direction; or, the bands can be employed on the bar, w, to guide said runner which by means of the hanger, C, is substantially swiveled to the sled seat. Said seat also being pivoted to the body of the sled can rock vertically in a manner which will be readily understood by those conversant with such matters Without a more explicit description.

I do not confine myself to pivoting the sled seat to the body of the sled as it may be rigid if deemed preferable.

, Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- The connected runners, b,b,in combination with the rock-bar, g; the seat, B, mounted on said bar and projecting in front of said runners; a bolt pendent centrally from the forward end of said seat; the hanger, O, fitted to rotate on said bolt and provided with arms, 1'; a steering runner pivoted adjacent its rear end to rock vertically in said arms; and the handle, w, on said runner all being arranged to operate substantially as described.
