TRACTION=ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,490, dated November 20, 1894.
Application led J'une 18, 1894. Serial No. 514,859. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES O. HEGGEM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Massillon, county of Stark, State of Ohio,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Traction-Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
1o My invention relates to improvements in traction engines, the objects of which are to provide means to more perfectly utilize the steam power, and thereby save a large quantity of fuel; to provide a spring foot board, for
the comfort of the engineer, and a conveniently disposed water-tank.
With these objects in view, my invention relates to certain features of construction and ,d combination of parts as will be hereinafter zo described and claimed.
Figure l is a perspective view illustrating my invention; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the rear end of the boiler or re box and the spring foot board secured thereto. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a fragment of the foot board and supporting frame. Fig. 4 is a plan of foot board supporting frame 5 Fig. 5, a section showing the spring under the foot board and resting on the supporting frame.
3o C represents the boiler, which may be of any of the well known and approved tubular forms, on which is mounted an engine frame D, having therein slides a, for the cross-head b. To the end of the frame D is secured the 5 5 smaller or high pressure steam cylinder E, supported on a bracket F, secured to the side of the boiler. A bracket as G, similar to bracket F, is secured to the smoke-box, H, at the front end of the boiler. On this bracket 4o G is secured the second or larger steam cylinder, J, which is also secured to the cylinder E, by the arm c. Steam is admitted through the pipe d, connecting the boiler with the steam chest, the iiow of which is regulated by the 4 5 governor e. The steam having exerted its energy to move the piston in the cylinder E, is exhausted into the pipe f, connecting the ex haust with the steam chest of cylinder J, and after exerting its energy on the piston head in cylinder J,whic11 is secured on the same piston rod L, to which the head in cylinder E is secured, it is exhausted through the exhaust pipe M, into the smoke stack N.
The steam chests and slide valves inclosed therein are on the reverse side of the cylinders, and consequently not shown, and may be of any of the well known and approved forms, and are actuated by an eccentric on the engine shaft O, in the usual way. Inthe construction of a compound tandem engine 6o for traction engines, the necessary location of the gear wheels, in front of the drive Wheels B, makes it absolutely necessary that the second steam cylinder be supported in front of the boiler.
The piston rod L, and cross-head b, are connected with the crank wheel P, by the conneoting rod Q, through which the steam power is transmitted to the shaft O, having a gear connection with the drive wheels B, by which 7o the machine is driven over the ground.
To the bracket F is secured the pump barrel R. The head of the pump with the valves therein is located at the side and between the cylinders E and J. The pump plunger g is connected to an arm h, secured to the crosshead b.
I do not regard it necessary for me to enter upon any extended statement of the advantage of the compound cylinders or second use 8o of steam on traction engines.
Below the boiler and secured thereto, is provided a water tank S, adapted to carry a considerable supply of water, which is passed into the tank through the aperture k. When pumping water from the tank to the boiler, a rubber hose is connected with the pump pipe Z, and dropped into the tank through the funnel aperture 7s.
At the rear end of the boiler, or rather on 9o the rear plate of the tire box, are secured hinge plates T, having at their upper ends lugs m, and at their lower ends, sockets as n. To the lugs m is hinged the frame U, which serves as a support for the foot board V. In the frame U are provided sockets as o, in which are placed coiled springs p, as shown in Fig.
5, one end to rest in the socket o, the other in a cup q, secured to the under side of the foot board as shown in Fig. 5. In the socket n, roo on hinge plate T, is also provided a coiled spring r, as shown in Fig. 3. v
At the rear portion of the frame U, are provided ti'i 1nnionss,to which the foot board U 'is hinged as shown in Fig. 3. The front ends or. toe portions oi' the frame U are adapted to pass between the lugs m on the hinge piece T, and having perforations to register with the perforations in the lugs m, are pivotally secured therein by the pins t.
In the heel portion of the frame U, is provided a socket fu that passes over the spring o, and socket mwhen the frame is in operative position as shown in Fig. 2.
To give better access to the lower door of the fire box, the frame and foot board may be turned up on its hinges, orremoved by taking out the pins t. The object sought by this feature of my invention is to provide an easy riding and removable foot boardfor the engineer.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a compound traction engine, the combination With the boiler, the bracket secured thereto, the cinder box and bracket, said brackets being located above the front supporting Wheels, the cylinders secured to said brackets and located respectively in front and in rear ot' the smoke stack, and the bars connecting said cylinders together, of the pump secured to the rear bracket, the Water tank secured to the under side of the boiler intermediate the front and rear wheels, the pipe connecting said pump and tank, the piston rod and cross head, the arm secu red to the cross head and the pump rod connected therewith, substantially as described.
2. In a traction engine, the combination with the plates secured to the front of the boiler and provided with lugs, of the frame removably pivoted thereto, the foot board pivoted at its front end to the frame, the sockets formed in said frame, the sockets secured to the foot board and the coiled springs, substantially as described.
3. In a traction engine, the combination with the plates secured to the front of the boiler and provided with lugs, of the frame removably pivoted to saidlugs, the foot board pivoted or hinged at its outer end to said frame, the sockets formed in said frame, the sockets secured tothe lower ends of said plates and the coiled springs located therein, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a steam boiler for traction engine, of afoot board comprising` the hinge pieces T, having lugs m, socket n, foot board frame U, pivotally secured to the hinge piece T, and having sockets o and '0, and truiinions s, foot boaril'V, hinged thereto, and the springs p and r, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of May, A. D. 1894.
CHARLES O. I-IEGGEM.
