To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES H. MAGGARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iowa City, in the county of Johnson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in separators; and the object of my invention is to to improve upon the devices heretofore employed in separators, and especially with the end in view of simplifying the constructions and producing a separator which will operate uniformly, require but little power to drive the same and be capable of ready adjustment to the work to be performed. I attain these objects by the constructions shown in the ac companying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are details of an adjusting device for the riddles. Fig.5 is a detail view of a riddle support. Fig. 6 'is a partial end view showing the 2 method of supporting the end of the auxiliary riddle or boot.

In the said drawings, a 0, represent an outer 0 frame and casing within which the operating parts are adapted to be supported.
I) is a cylinder and b b b are vibrating frames or heaters over which the straw is adapted to be carried, said frames or heaters 3 5 being provided with the usual carrying teeth and having an open bottom formed from suitable slats to permit the grain discharged therefrom to fall through said frames onto the riddles or separating devices or onto the con- 0 veyer which discharges into said separating devices. These frames are respectively pivoted at one end to swinging arms orlinks c c c and are supported at the opposite ends on crank shafts d d (F. These crankv shafts are 4 5 adapted to turn in suitable bearings secured to the bottoms of the frames and are each provided with a suitable gear by means of which the respective shafts are caused to-revolve simultaneously and in a definite relation to each other. This is preferably accomplished by providing the respective shafts d cl (1 with sprocket wheels 01 and connecting said sprocket wheels with driving chains 0. The
res pective crank shafts are so placed with refframes are elevated and depressed bythe operation of the cranks they tend to balance each other and thus exert a uniform strain on the driving gear.
Near the bottom and rear of the casing a a is a vibrating support 6, supported on suitable 63 hangers e, and adapted to be operated through a connecting rod (2 and pivoted lever c from the vibrating frame 19 This support 6 contains the usual screen 6 and below this support is a separate support or shoe f, in which is placed an adjustable screenf. This supportfis connected through suitable operating devices to cause it to receive a lateral vibrating motion so that the material which passes through the screen e is further sepa- 5 rated, and falling on the incline f is carried by the conveyerf to the proper point of discharge. The tailings from the screenf' pass into a boot f and thence to a conveyerf where they are carried in the usual manner to a return elevator and returned to the thrashing cylinder for further treatment. The tailings from the screen or riddle c are discharged onto an auxiliary riddle or boot, 6 which is hinged at one end to the support 6 and at the other supported on a U-shaped support a pivotally connected at its upper end to adjustable bearing boxes e secured to the end of the frame or casing a a in such a mannor that the end of the auxiliary riddle or boot a may be raised or lowered as desired to cause the tailings discharged thereon to return with the grain or heads from said boot or riddle and be subjected to a greater or less separation by the agitation of said auxiliary 5 boot or riddle. The material which passes through said auxiliary riddle falls into the bootf and is conveyed with the other tailings to the return.
Below and to the rear of the last vibrating frame 12 I provide a short straw carrier g, adapted to receive and discharge the straw point.
To provide for adjusting and removably supporting the screen f in the supportf, I construct on each side of said support a supporting plate h. These plates are each set at an angle and are provided at one side with a slotted way h from which lead angularly-arranged openings h 71 h'*, adapted to receive a supporting pin 72. on the side of thescreen f.
It will be understood that the respective openings or slots h h h are placed on opposite sides of the support and stand opposite each other, and each succeeding opening is arranged below and slightly to the rear of the preceding one so that when the projecting pin or stud on the screen is inserted into the slotted way h of the respective plates, the said pins on opposite sides of the screen must fall into the corresponding opening on each side so that the screen is always properly su pported at a uniform height on opposite sides and at the same time is capable of being readily adjusted or removed by simply lifting said screen into the longitudinal way and moving it to the proper distance therein.
The opposite end of the screen is supported on cam-shaped supports it, supported on a shaft which extends laterally across the machine. This shaft 70' is preferably made square in cross'section and extends laterally through a hub 70 of a swinging arm k arranged on the outside of the frame or casing a a. This arm k is provided with a segmental extension 7t having a slotted opening 70 adapted to receive a bolt it having a suitable thumb nut W, by means of which the arm may be held in different positions of adjustment. An adjustment of the arm produces a like adjustment of the supporting cams so that means are provided by which the forward end of the screen or riddle f may be raised or lowered as desired. The usual fan and a blower m are provided in front of the riddle or screen f; the supporting shaft in being arranged across the discharge opening from said fan or blower.
By the arrangement described of the cam supports and their adjusting devices, the front end of the screen or riddle may be so raised or lowered as to throw the blast from said fan either through the screen from the bottom or from the top, or longitudinally along the same from above and below. The shaft 75' is fitted loosely in the hub 70 of the vibrating arm 70 said arm being secured against lateral movement in the casing by a suitable retaining device 70 which permits the arm to turn but prevents any lateral movement thereof. This construction permits the shaft 70 to move through the hub to compensate for the vibrations of the support f and screen f, and at the same time does not interfere with the adjustment of the screenby means of the vibrating arm, as described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a separator, the combination with a thrashing cylinder, of three vibrating frames arranged in series, as described, and each supported on pivoted hangers at one end and carried at the other by a suitable crank shaft, the cranks which support the end frames being arranged respectively sixty degrees in front and behind the cranks which support the middle frame, and a driving connection between said crank shafts which causes them to maintain the same relative position, substantially as specified.
2. In a separator, a riddle support consisting essentially of inclined grooved plates each having a longitudinal way and supporting slots or openings connected to said longitudinal way at an angle thereto, said slots or openings being arranged in series with each slot or opening below and to the rear of the next preceding slot, substantially as specified.
4. The combination with a vibrating support, a rock shaft therein having cam-shaped lingers, a screen resting on said cam-shaped fingers, projecting pins on said screen adapted to engage in inclined slotted plates having a series of openings extending from a longi tudinal slot therein, a pivoted arm secured to the outer casing, and a connection between said arm and rock shaft whereby said rock shaft may be moved to adjust said screen, substantially as specified.
