The wire rotating device D, is provided with a surrounding casing d10, having two series of grooved rolls CZ and 0112, suitably j ou rnaled to movable bearings d and dis, provided in the walls of the casing d10, and with pivotally supported tightening devices dlg and d, controlled by means of swivel-connections dm and dw, for frictionally engaging` and disengaging said series of grooved rolls du and dm, to and from the drawn wire 10, in its travel between the same.
In the rotation of the device D, by means of the gear-wheels d8 and e, the wire 10 is revolved around and around land at the same time at'required speed is drawn through the machine in a manner to be presently more fully explained.

Adjacent to the clothing of the carding engine or machine G, is located a wiper or delivery roll g2, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 2, and arranged so as to present the fibrous material to the rotatable wire 10, drawn longitudinally in the path of crosswise delivery of the material thereto and in such manner as to lay and Wrap said material in spiral or similar form thereon, as will be presently more fully explained.
The standard D5, is provided with a flanged tubular bearing block d1", having a vertical channel d20, extending through the same and in communication with a dish-shaped lubrieating receptacle C321.

It may be here remarked that the applied fibrous material 11, from the carding engine G, to the constantly drawn and rotating wire 10, in passage through the nozzle h, will be compacted thereto and present a smooth surface before reaching the Whirler or liier frame H, for the reception of a binder l2, therefrom. This whirler or flier frame H, is provided with a grooved pulley h3, which is adapted for the reception of a belt, not shown, for rotating the same from any suitable source of power so as to permit in the rotation of the wire 10, of the whirler I-I, laying by means of the bobbins or spools h2, a series of threads in regular succession onto the covered wire so as to present a smooth surface and to constitute an efficient binder therefor.

The hollow revoluble journal 112, of the wire drawing mechanism I, is extended at the right hand portion thereof and to which is secured a double'grooved pulley j, and a single grooved pulley j. The latter pulley carries a nozzle or delivery tube J, with enlarged ends and with a contracted and curved body portion, as shown in Fig. 2, for permitting of the delivery of the covered and corded conductor l0,dra wn therethrough, onto a device to be hereinafter explained.

The operation of the machine hereinbefore described is as followsz-The wire is drawn from the reel B, by means of the mechanism I, through the wire rotating device D, and between the two series of frictional rolls thereof to and through the bath of insulating material contained in the steam jacketed tank F, thence into the presence of the fibrous material delivered in regulated quantity from the carding engine G, and so that in the rotation of the wire drawn in the manner hereinbefore described, the fibrous material, such as cotton or the like, in spiral or other form will be incorporated with and wrapped around the more or less moist wire 10, from the bath of insulating material andwhich is presented at the funnelshaped end of the nozzle h, of the whirler or flier frame H, drawn therethrough and uniformly compacted to the wire prior to the laying onto the same in regular succession of the series of threads or cords from the flier frame or whirler H, for instance as illustrated in Fig. 2, and thence through the device I, and the respective hollow spindles thereof to and through the delivery nozzle or tube J, onto the laying up reel L, as will be readily understood from Figs. l and 2, of the drawings.
It may be here remarked that after the starting of the machine such as hereinbefore described, the fibrous material is applied continuously to the rotating insulated wire l0, and as well the cord or thread to form the binder therefor and prior to the laying up of the same onto the reel for subsequent use, as an electric conductor. After the applying of the wire in coiled form onto the reeling device L, it may be withdrawn therefrom through a bath of insulating material to thoroughly saturate the same and to produce thereby an insulated electric conductor or from the reeling device L, the material may be subjected to a braiding or weaving operation to form an outer covering therefor, which it is desirable in some cases to provide such a conductor with, for outside work.
It will be manifestly obvious from the foregoing description that modifications may be made in respect to details or the particular arrangement of the machine of my invention for the aforesaid purposes, without departing from the spirit thereof; and hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement of a plant as liereinbefore explained.
I am aware that telegraph cables have been provided in which successive layers of bitumen separated and maintained by spiral provided with grooved pulleys bands of bituminized paper have been applied and consolidated by coils of bituminized twine or yarn, and the whole protected by an outer covering of metallic wire. Therefore, I lay no claim to any such construction for the production of a cable, for my invention differs therefrom in that it consists essentially in the mode of subjectinga wire to the operations hereinbefore described and to be hereinafter pointed out in the claims by the employment of suitable apparatus for the production thereof.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The herein described mode of producing yan electric conductor, which consists in continuously rotating and drawing a wire through a bath of insulating material, feeding and while the coated wire is still moist applying and compacting cotton or the like under required tension and in regulated quantity to said continuously rotated and drawn wire and applying threads to said covered wire to form a binder therefor, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. An apparatus for producing an electric conductor, comprising a reel adapted to contain wire, means controlled from a main driving shaft for rotating said wire, a jacketed appliance adapted to contain fluid insulating material, a carding engine adapted to present fibrous material in the path of the moving wire, a whirler or flier and a device connected therewith for compacting said material to said wire and said whirler or flier adapted to lay a cord or thread in regularsequence onto said covered wire, mechanism for drawing said wire and actuated by means of gearing from said driving shaft, a delivery nozzle or tube, a rotatable laying up reel, and means for actuating said moving members, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. An apparatus for producing an electric conductor, comprising a rotatable reel adapted to support wire, a main driving shaft, means for actuating said reel and controlled from said shaft, a wire rotating device, a tank adapted to contain material for application to said wire and provided with entrance and exit nozzles of different forms, a carding engine with delivery appliances, a whirler or flier with a funnel-shaped nozzle for compacting fibrous material to said wire and prior to cording of the same by means of said flier or whirler, a wire drawing mechanism controlled by means connected with said driving shaft, a delivery nozzle and winding up reel, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
