UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT N. BOSTON, OF OIIESTERTOWN, MARYLAND.
lRONlNG-BOARD ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,846, dated November 6, 1894.
/ Application filed July 24:, 1894:. Serial No. 518,432. on) model.)
To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT N. BOSTON, of Chestertown, in the county of Kent and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful an ironing board with the attachment applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a section through the line 22 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A represents the small end of any ironing board which may be padded and covered in the usual way. Near the end of the ironing board on its upper side is detachably fastened by screws (1 a a fiat metal plate B to which is pivoted at b a semicircular or bowed frame 0 one end of which 0 is bent inwardly and is made to engage any one of a series of ratchet teeth 1) formed on the edge of the base plate B. Surrounding the plate B and expanding frame 0 is an expansible collar-D of brass or elastic spring metal, which is securely riveted at d to a lug of the base plate, and whose ends 6 e lap past each other. This collar forms the expansible holder for the neck band of the shirt which is buttoned around the metal holder, the latfor holding the neck band distended and removing all wrinkles from the same, and also from the adjacent portions of the bosom, which may then be ironed and made to maintain its proper shape.
To adjust the holder to a smaller size of neck band the end 0 of the semi-circular frame is adjusted inwardly toward the center on the ratchet teeth, and the spring collar is allowed to contract to suit the size of the neck band, as shown in dotted lines. To fit a large neck band the end c of the semi-circular frame is adjusted outwardly along the ratchet teeth as will be clearly understood.
To hold the detached lapped ends of the spring collar from accidentally rising up, a lip or over-hanging flange f is formed on the upper edge of the semi-circular frame. Wedge shaped projections c 0 both alike are also formed on the arm 0 to prevent the spring collar from slipping in the other direction and to give the collar a slight flare.
In applying the neck band to my attachment, the shirt is put over the ironing board in the usual Way, with the neck portion at the small end of the board and surrounding the expansible collar D. The neck band is then buttoned around the expansible collar. D beneath the overhanging lip f, and the neck band is then distended by expanding the spring collar D by adjusting outwardly the semicircular frame 0 until all Wrinkles are removed from-the neck band and it is smoothly and tightly held in place beneath the lip fin a slightly tapering position caused by the greater expansion of the lower edge of the spring collar produced bythe inclined projections'c c on the semicircular arm 0.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I 1. An ironing board attachment consisting of a base plate with ratchet teeth b formed on the same, a bowed or semi-circular expand- .ing frame 0 pivoted to one side of the base plate and having its other end bent inwardly to engage the ratchet teeth, and a circular lapped spring collar fastened to the base plate and encircling the expanding frame substantially as shown and described.
2. The expanding frame having overhanging lip f wedge shaped projections c c and inturned end combined with and pivoted to the base plate and an expansible spring 001- lar section substantially as and for the'purpose described. I
