'NITED ST T-ES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED B. EMERY, OF BOSTON, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO CHARLES S.
BINNER, OF MALDEN, AND EDWIN J. PHILLIPS, OF EVERETT, MASSA- CHUSETTS.
PRINTERS METAL FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,660, dated November 6, 1 894.
A plieatitn filed February 1, 1894.. Serial No- 498,780. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED B. EMERY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Boston,in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Printers Metal Furniture, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a piece of printers metal furniture constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of a piece of my improved printers metal furniture having types set within its vertical slots or mortises. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the piece of furniture shown in Fig. 1. Fig. lis a transverse vertical section through the piece of furniture shown in Fig. 2. g
In setting up a job of printing containing curved or irregular lines, it has hitherto been customary to place the types between curved rules or leads previously bent to the exact shape required for that special job, plaster of paris being frequently used for the purpose of holding intact the form so made so that it can be lifted up without liability of any of its parts becoming displaced, much valuable time being thus consumed in setting up a job of this character.
My invention has for its object to greatly facilitate the work of setting up curved or irregular lines of type and to improve the construction of printers metal furniture, whereby it may be made to serve not only as ordinary furniture;but as a support or holder for curved, regular or irregular lines of type, thereby effecting a material saving in time, labor and material.
To this end my invention consists in an article of printers furniture provided with type-holding mortises or slots of straight, curved, or other desired shape extending entirely through the block from top to bottom, said slots having vertical walls whereby they are adapted to hold the types firmly and immovably in position for printing, as hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the said drawings, A represents a piece of printers metal furniture consisting of a rectangular block of metalwhich maybe made as usual of any suitable size or shape to adapt it for any purpose for which ordinary 'metal furniture is employed, such as filling up blank spaces in a form and the imposition and lock-up of the same. This block A is provided with a series of type-holding slots or mortises b of a variety of different sizes and shapes as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, said slots extending entirely through the block from top to bottom and having perfectly true vertical walls parallel throughout their length, whereby they are adapted to receive and hold the types 0 'firmly in position for printing with perfect alignment, as shown in Fig. 2. I am thus enabled to provide without any additionalexpense, a series of set shapes in great variety and of difierent sizes and forms for the reception of curved, regular or irregular lines of type in such manner that they may be easily justified or fastened so that they can be lifted with the block or piece of furniture independently of the lock-up of the form; my invention thus enabling me to combine in a single article, a piece of printers furniture and a support or holder for lines of type, especially those which have been hitherto difficult to set up.
In constructing my improved furniture it will be made of many difierent sizes similar to furniture now in common use, and the vertical type-holding slots or mortises will be made in'a great variety of different shapes and designs, such as curves or other forms to adapt them for general use, and of different sizes or widths, for the reception of difierent sizes of types. 1
By my improvement, printers furniture can thus be utilized for a purpose never before contemplated, and by thus providing the compositor with set shapes which are always at hand ready for immediate use, he is enabled to set quickly and accurately a job containing any curved, regular or irregular lines which cannot be justified in the form or stick as readily as straight lines, the necessity of using curved rules or leads with or without plaster of paris being at the same time entirely dispensed with.
In practice I have it found possible for a compositor by the use of my improved typeholding furniture, to set up a job having curved or irregular lines in about 0ne-tenth the time hitherto required for the sam'ework where curved rules or leads, or plaster of paris are employed.
The block may be used either side uppermost, and it may be turned around as desired to bring any particular slot into the required position for printing.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- As a new article of manufacture a piece of filling-in printers furniture, the said piece be- 15 ing additionally provided with type-holding mortises or slots of straight, curved or other suitable shape extending entirely'through the block, said slots having vertical walls whereby they are adapted to hold the types securely 20 in position for printing, substantially as set forth.
Witness my hand this 25th day of January,
