LEVER-HANDLEFOR WAFFLE-IRONS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,634, dated November 6, 1894.

Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN J.Hnss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lever-Handles for Waffle-Irons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention was especially designed as an attachment for waffle-irons, or similar cooking utensils, having a pivoted or turnover member, in order to better adapt the same for use on gas and oil stoves.

In this class of stoves, as is well known, the pot-holes are comparatively shallow and the burners are arranged, so that their top surfaces are very nearly in the same plane with the stove plate. Hence, when a wafile-iron or a similar cooking utensil, is applied thereto, there is not suflicient clearance to permit the griddle-iron or pivoted member to be turned over. It is necessary to raise the griddle-iron before attempting to turn the same, or otherwise it will strike the burner. To meet these conditions, I provide a lifting device adapted to raise the griddle iron above its normal seat on the waffle-iron ring sufiiciently far to give the clearance necessary to permit the same to be turned over. I preferably construct this device in the form of a lifting lever, having a fulcrum-block applicable to the griddle-iron ring or support, and provided with a pair of bearing arms forward of the fulcrum, adapted to engage under the trunnions of the griddle-iron, and havinga handle-arm back of the fulcrum within the grasp of the hand when taking hold of the handle of the griddle-iron support. With this form of the device the griddle-iron can be raised by a leverage-lift, under the grasp of one hand. It is also detachable and may be used as a carrier to entirely remove the griddle-iron, or to handle the same in any desired way. The fulcrum-block is preferably carried on the under side of-the lever-handle, and is applifle-irons, the device is equally applicable to any other cooking utensil, which comprises a relatively fixed supporting member applicable to the pot-hole and apivoted cooking member mounted thereon, for containing the ,material to be cooked, and which it is desirable to turn over to bring both sides of the same in contact with the flames or heat from the burner. Y Egg-broilers, for example, are conveniently made with apivoted member of this kind. Turnover pan-cake griddles, pivoted toasters and broilers, are other instances.

In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated my invention, as applied to waflieirons, wherein, like letters referring to like parts throughout Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section, showing a waffle iron equipped with my attachment, in position on the stove. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same removed from the stove, a part of the waffleiron griddle being broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail showing the fulcrum-seat on the handle of the griddle-iron ring; and Fig. 4 is a similar view, showing the fulcrum-block on the handle of the lifting-lever.

A represents a pot-hole portion of an ordinary gas or oil stove. B represents the burner of the same.

C O is the griddle-iron ring or support, of which 0 is the ring and O is the handle to the same.

D is the waffle-iron griddle of the ordinary construction pivotaily mounted on the griddle-iron ring or support.

E E E is the lifting lever having the fulcrum-block formed integral with the handleportion of the same. The part E is of a semicircular form, and constitutesa pair of bearing arms, having hook-like bearings e, at their extremities, for engaging under the trnnnions of the griddle-iron. The fulcrum block E has a narrow tongue-like part c, at its lower end adapted to enter a slot 0, formed in the handle 0' of the griddle-iron ring; and is also provided with lateral ribs or projecting surfaces e adapted to rest in notches c, on the top walls of the slot '0. In other words, the slot and notches in the handle of thegriddleiron ring form a seat for the fulcrum block of the lifting lever, which serves to hold it in place and permit of the tilting or'leverage movement. The part E of the lifting lever, is conveniently formed of heavy wire and the parts E and E are conveniently made of castmetal, and are united to the wire in the casting process.

The device is applied, as shown in Fig. 1. It is obvious, that by grasping the two handles, the griddleiron may be lifted up by one hand with a leverage lift into the dotted line position, shown in Fig. 1, and be turned over with the other hand applied to the griddleiron handle. If desired, the lever may be used simply as a carrier, to remove the griddleiron.

The attachment is of great service; and although the invention is only a few months old, the article has met with a universal demand and has already gone into extensive use. It enables the griddle-iron ring or support to be made comparatively shallow, so as to bring the griddle iron close to the burner, giving a much better and quicker action from the heat. Although of special service on gas and oil stoves, on account of the locality of the burner, it is also useful when the waffle iron is used on coal or wood stoves, and especially the latter, as it will often happen that the fire pot will be so nearly filled by the fuel, as to interfere with the revolving movement of the griddle iron.

It is of course obvious, that the details of the construction might be changed in various ways, without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim to have been the first to have provided a device of any kind for raising the griddle-iron above its normal seat on the griddle iron support, to afford clearance for the revolving movement of the griddle-iron.

It is of course well understood, that the griddle iron ring or support is relatively heavy, as compared with the griddle-iron, so that it affords an ample base of resistance for the leverage action of the lifting-lever, under the grasp of the hand.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:

1. The combination of a base, the cooking member having trunnions, such as a waffle iron, and a lever fulcrumed on the base and having at one end a handle and at the other end arms having bearings for the trunnions of the waffle iron.

2. The combination of a base having trunnion bearings, a cooking member having trunnions, such as a waffle iron, and a lever fulcrumed on the base and having at one end a handle and at the other end arms having bearings for the trunnions of the wafile iron.

3. The combination of a base, a cooking member having trunnions, such as a Waffle iron, and a removable lever fulcrumed on the base and having at one end a handle and at the other end arms having bearings for the trunnions of the wafiie iron.

4.. The combination of a base member consisting of a support having bearings and of a laterally extending handle, a cooking member having trunnions, such as a waflie iron, and a lever fulcrumed on said member and having at one end arms provided with bearings for the trunnions of the wafiie iron, and at the other end with a handle within the grasp of the hand when applied to the handle of the base member, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. The combination with the supporting base or ring provided with a handle having a slot and notches, as described, of the pivoted wafiie iron on said base, and the lifting lever, having on its handle portion a fulcrum block constructed with a tongue and bearing ribs to fit said slot and notches as a seat, and provided with forwardly extended bearing arms applicable to the trunnions of the waffle iron, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

6. A turnover cooking vessel, such as a waffle iron adapted for use on gas and vapor stoves, comprising the combination with a suitable base, of a griddle supported by said base, and a lever fulcrumed on said base and operative, by downward pressure thereon, to adjust the griddle in respect to the base, for afiording clearance to permit the griddle to be revolved, without striking the burner.
