CENTER-PUNCH MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 528,559, dated November 6, 1894. 7
Application filed May 12,1894. smart. 511,016. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LROBERT SINGLETON PEA BODY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of- Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Center-Punch Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of my present inven tion is to provide a simple, durable, and automatic machine adapted to afford freedom of both hands of the operator for holding the work and to be readily released or set in motion for making a small mark or indentation such as is usually employed for guiding drills and for other purposes and to this end my invention consists of a center punch machine comprising the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and
scope of my invention will be more fully 1111-1 derstood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof and in which a machine embodying features of my invention is illustrated partly in section and partly in elevation.
In the drawing, 1, is a main frame comprising, in the present instance, standards 2,
and a base 3.
4, is a yoke adjustable in respect to the standards 2, and provided with a sleeve or tubular guide 5, in which a center punch 6, is afforded freedom ofvertical motion.
7, is a set screw by means of which the yoke at, may be clamped to place at any required height.
8, is a hammer afforded a range of vertical motion and tending to strike the upper end of the center punch 6.
9, is a spring tending to solicit the hammer 8, downward.
14, is a spring soliciting the upper end of the trigger lever into the position shown.
The mode of operation of the hereinabove described device is as follows: The hammer 8,-is drawn upward with the result that the detent 12, is turned in the same direction and subsequently falls beneath the top of the hammer, whereby the latter is detained in elevated position. The work upon which it is desired to make a center punch mark, is then placed beneath the lower end of the center punch 6. For this purpose, the yoke 4, may be adjusted upward or downward as required. The center punch 6, being free to slide in the sleeve 5, rests lightly upon the work, so that the latter may be shifted manually until the point of the center punch oecupies the required position. The Work may now be held firmly by both hands of the operator who touches the lower endof the trigger lever 10, for example, with one finger. This motion of the lower end of the trigger lever causes the upper end thereof to draw the detent 12, clear of the hammer 8, whereupon the latter descends and strikes the upper end of the punch 6, with the result that the point of the punch makes a slight indentation or punch mark upon the work. The force of the spring 9, may be increased or diminished by shifting the yoke 4, to which it is attached, upward or downward.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains that modifications may be made in details without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction hereinabove set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A center punch machine comprising a main frame provided with standards carrying a sleeve, a center punch movable in and guided by said sleeve, a hammer guided by said standards and tending to strike said punch, and trigger-and-detent connections for restraining and releasing said hammer, substantially as described.
2. A' center punch machine comprising,
