l UNITED STATE-s PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HELLINGS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOBACCO-CUTTER.i
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,540, dated November 6, 1894.
Application filed February 7, 1894. Serial No. 499,352. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN HELLINGs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Penn- Sylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Cutters, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a tobacco cutter embodying a pouch in which the tobacco is carried, a frame on said pouch formed of separated portions, a connecting pin or screw therefor and blades mounted in said frame, said pin acting as a stop for said blades, the construction and operation of parts being hereinafter set forth.
Figure l represents a perspective View of a tobacco cutter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of a portion thereof. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section thereof. Fig. 4'represents a side elevation of a portionA thereof. Fig. 5 represents a perspective View of a blade and connected parts of the device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates a pouch or bag which depends yfrom and is secured to the frame B, by means of the encircling band B. Each of the opposite sides C and E of the frame, is formed of separated portions which have a connectingpin or screw D. The separation of the portions of each side forms passages or grooves C for the play of the arms F of the blades G, which guide said blades and connect them with the frame B, said blades having backs l-l, on which are the set-out iinger pieces J, it being noticed that the arms F extend parallel with the blades G, and project inwardly from the backs G, it being evident as in Fig. 4., that each blade and the back, the arms and the finger pieces thereof, may be formed of a sin gle piece of metal, properly cut, bent and shaped.
Portions of the inner sides of the arms F are recessed as at K, forming the shoulders L, the recesses receiving the screws D, while the shoulders L form stops to limit the out- Yward motions ofsaid arms, and consequently of the blades, as will be seen in Figs. l and 2. The operation is as follows: The tobacco is carried in' the pouch, which latter is formed of flexible material, and when it is desired to cut oif a piece of the same, the blades G are drawn out by means ofl the finger pieces J, and the tobacco raised by properly manipulating the pouch until the piece-of required size appears above the blades, when the ingers are pressed against the backs H of the blades, the latter then cutting through the tobacco`and severing the projecting piece thereof, while the remainder drops into the pouch whose mouth is now closed by the blades. rlhe closing motion of the blades is limited by the backs of the same contacting With the sides of the frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
1. A tobacco pouch having a framewith sides formed of separated portions, a connecting pin or screw for said portions, and blades with backs provided with guiding arms and finger pieces, said pin forming a stop for said blades, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A tobacco pouch of exible material having a frame with a securing band at the mouth thereof,'blades on opposite sides of said framehaving backs with finger pieces projecting therefrom, arms on the ends of said backs adapted to move in recesses between separated lportions of the sides of the frame, and stops for said arms formed of securing screws in the said separated portions of thesides, said parts being combined substantially as described.
JOHN HELLINGS.
