Description

(No Model.)
O H. BRINKMANN.
OAR LOOK No.528,221. Patenfiedoot. 30,1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEINRICH BRINKMANN,
OF MUNIQII, GERMANY.
OAR-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 528,221, dated October 30, 189 4,
Application filed April 20, 1894.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HEINRICH BRINKMANN, a citizen of Germany, and a resident of Mnnich, Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in oars. r t
The object of the invention is to provide an oar lock of simple construction, which will permit the oar to swing in all necessary directions Within the limits required in rowing.
The invention consists in the features, details of construction and combination of parts which will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and then particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings which illustrate a device embodying my invention, Figure 1 represents a section; Fig. 2, a plan, and Fig. 3 a per spective view of the same.
As seen from the drawings, the oar-shaft is swiveled or journaled, so as to rotate in a box or sleeve, 10. The said sleeve, in turn, is arranged to swing horizontally on the gunwale of the boat by means of an eye engaging the stud, 10, (see Fig. 1,) and said sleeve is, moreover, arranged to rotate on a horizontal stud on the said eye. The sleeve, 70, is provided with a slot, 2, through which passes Serial No. 508,324. (No model.)
a pin, n, formed on a co1lar,b, secured to the shaft or loom, b, the said pin striking against the ends of said slot, at the two limits of its motion. During the act of rowing, the oar shaft turns, 1'. e., the blade assumes a steep position when pulling the oar and a flat or feathered position when moving in the opposite direction.
It will be seen thatby my construction, the oar is permitted to turn in all necessary directionsand is easily manipulated, owingto the fact that the movements are controlled largely by the action of the oar lock.
What I claim, and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a fixed erect stud, and an eye movable thereon in a horizontal plane,0f a sleeve provided witha stud-opening andwith a recess at the inner end of the stud-opening, and a connecting stud inserted in the stud-opening and attached to the eye, said connecting stud havinga head movable in the recess in the sleeve, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres ence of two subscribing witnesses.
HEINRICH BRINKMANN.
