SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,089, dated October 23, 1894. Application filed January 17,1894. 1 Serial No 497,186- (No model.)
To wZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. GOGLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middleville,
in the county of Barry and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Seals, of which the following is a specifiv cation.
first, to form a cheap and efficient seal for freight cars and other similar purposes, which I can obviate the necessity of soldering or riveting and which can only be removed by I severing the strip of metal or material from which the same is made; second, to construct a seal in a simple and cheap manner which can readily be applied by hand. These objectsI accomplish by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a plan view of the blank cut in form for the seal, and preferably made from a thin piece of sheet metal, or other similar metallic substance. .Fi g. 2 shows the body of the seal folded, and the hook at the end of the narrow part of the seal bent in position for insertion into the opening, which is shown by J in Fig. 2, thereby forming a complete seal. Fig. 3 shows the seal locked in posi- 'tion as the same will appear when applied in sealing a freight car or other article. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the seal showing its parts in locked position.
- Referring now to Fig. 1, A represents a projecting locking point which is adapted to bend at its base where it is integral with a body portion B. This point A is preferably made triangular in form, as shown, but may be made in any suitable form, to engage with the opening K in a strap portion E hereinafter described. When the projecting point A isbent over it substantially covers the rectangular opening G, which opening in an ordinary size of locking seal would be five-sixinch. This opening is out through the part a B. The part B is folded on the perpendlcular linesY Z shown in Fig. 1, which folding parts are designated by N and M. The parts N and M are bent over on the lines Y and Z so as to rest upon the surface of the part B. The part or section B is bent over along the line R onto the part or section 0, and the edges of the part O,viz: O and P, are bent over along the lines W and X so as to partially cover the parts N M. Then the parts so bent, including A, B and G, are bent over on the line S-S, so that the slots H and I will register with each other. The part D is then bent on the line TTso that its opposite sides will fold close together. The strap or part E which is integral with the part D is thendrawn through the openingsH and I as far as the part D will allow. V
K is an opening near the extremity of the strap E farthest from part D, which opening is preferably triangular in form, and strap E is bent on the line U so as to form a hook F. The seal now is in the form shown in Fig. 2 and is ready to be applied to the car or other article designed to be sealed.
The seal is applied as follows: Take hold of the strap or extension E and bend it in a circle in either direction so that the hook F on the strap E is inserted into the opening shown by J, the strap being inserted until the hook F drops into the opening G. Then by slightly pulling back, the hook F slips under B forcing down the point A so that it engages and passes through the opening K, forming a complete lock and fastening within the box formed by the folded parts hereinbefore described.
I have described my preferred form, but it will be understood that changes may be made in the form without departing from the invention.
When the seal is thus folded and locked there is no way to remove the same from the body to which itlis attached except by severing the strap E.
The seal as thus constructed is composed of two parts, to wit: the binding strap E, and the body forming the lock which is composed of the folded sections and lock therein.
I provide for convenience a notch or small IOC hole V in order to facilitate the breaking of v the seal. This however may be dispensed with.
In order to remove the seal after it has been applied it is necessary to sever the strap E at some point. The name of the railway company, station names, numbers, 850., may be printed on the strap E, and the patent mark, if desired, can be applied on the exposed side of D.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A seal composed of a strip of metal having a widened end foldedtransversely to form a body portion composed of a plurality of sections folded together and provided with slots and a locking projection, and a binding strap integralwith and extended from said body portion and provided with a booked and slotted end adapted to enter the slots of the body portion and automatically engage its locking projection, substantially as described.
2. In a seal, the combination with a body portion provided with a locking projection and comprising a plurality of folded sections having slots that register with each other, of a booked and slotted binding strap adapted to be passed through the slots in'the body portion and automatically engage its locking projection, substantially as described.
3. Aseal formed of a strip of metal, having a projecting point as A, sections as B, O and D, an extended strap as E, said section B provided with an opening G, and sections 0 and D provided with the slots H and I adapted to register with each other, also provided with the opening J for the'insertion of the strap E, and the strap E provided with the opening K adapted to engage with the locking point A when folded in position, substantially as described.
4. In a seal, the combination with a body portion composed of a plurality of folded and slotted sections having at one end an inwardly folded and pointed looking projection, of a binding strap having one end integral with said body portion and provided at its other end with a slotted hook adapted to enter the slots of the body portion and automatically engage its pointed locking projection, substantially as described.
