W. H. HART.
STRAP HINGE Patent ed Oct. 23, 1894.
w/ZNESSEE ETERS cc PHOTD-UTHOw WASHINGTON n c UNITED STATES ATENT FFIcE.
WILLIAM H. HART, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
STRAP-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,975, dated October 23, 1 894. Application filed April 10, 1 8 94. Serial No. 507,032. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inStrapHinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in strap hinges, and the main object of my improvement is to form a strap hinge of superior strength in a cheap and efficient manner.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my hinge. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan or edge View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the knuckle portion of the two blanks for forming a pair of hinge leaves. I
The leaves A and B may be of any ordinary form throughout their major or body portion. The knuckles are formed by rolling the metal upon itself and letting the end of the metal which forms the knuckle lap over a portion of the leaves. The leaf A has its knuckle 4 formed by rolling over the middle tongue 5, the ends of which are split and turned outwardly toward the edge of the leaf, as at 6, 6. The portions so lapped upon the leaf A may if desired be secured thereto by means of the rivets 7, but said rivets may be dispensed with if desired. I form screw holes near the ends 6, 6 as at 8, 8, which screw holes register with holes through the leaf A so that when the fastening screws are inserted the ends 6, 6 are firmly secured in place and the rivets 7, 7 then become unnecessary. I form this middle tongue 5 from the blank 5 Fig. 3, which is split along the middle broken line 9. The leaf B is provided with two tongues 10, 10 which are rolled over and lapped upon its body to form the knuckles 11, and I bend these ends inwardly so as to meet each other as shown in Fig. 1. I also provide this leaf and its tongues with screw holes 8 as in the leaf A and said tongues may or may not be additionally secured by means of the rivets 12. These tongues 10 are formed from the tongue blanks 10 in the blank, Fig. 3, in which the broken lines designate the line of severing the two blanks and show how one may be cut from the other. The corners of the leaf A between the outwardly turned ends 6 of the tongue 5 and the knuckles 11 may be cut out as shown in Fig. 1, and as indicated by the dotted lines 13 in Fig. 3, thereby skeletonizing the leaf A. In like manner that portion of the leaf B which lies between the knuckle 4 and the tongues 10 may be cut out to skeletonize the leaf B, as shown in Fig. 1, and as indicated by the dotted line let in Fig. 3, but if desired both of the leaves may be left solid and merely cut on the dividing lines, as indicated in Fig. 3 by the broken lines. The leaves are connected by any ordinary pin or pintle, as at 15.
By my improvements, I form a knuckle with overlapping ends turned outwardly on one leaf and inwardly on the companion leaf so as to produce a bracing effect and form a very strong and efficient hinge, which if desired, may have the adjacent portion. of the metal removed to improve the appearance of the hinge. At the same time this bracing effect is produced by bending edgewise the straight tongues which are so disposed on the leaf blanks that said leaves may be cut out one from the other with said tongue blanks thereon, whereby there is no waste of stock and consequently this superior article is produced at a small cost.
I am aware that a prior expired patent shows and describes a sheet metal hinge having the knuckles formed by rolling the metal upon itself and letting the end of the metal which forms each of the knuckles lap over a portion of the leaves, andI hereby disclaim the same.
My hinge includes the entire hinge above disclaimed and in addition thereto I extend the knuckle forming tongues so that the central one may be split and have its members bent edgewise and turned outwardly to the edges of its leaf while the other knuckle tongues may be bent edgewise and turned inwardly with their ends abutting against each other thus producing an ornamental appearance and giving an additional bracingefifect while at the same time the parts may be cut out from each other without waste of stock.
I claim as my inventiontoo The herein described strap hinge, consistof said leaf bent edgewise and turned ining of the leaf A having a middle tongn-ewardly, substantially as described and for the 10 forming-knuckle rolled upon itself and di purpose specified. vided into two members which are lapped 5 upon the body of said leaf bent edgewise and turned outwardly, as shown, and a companion Witnesses: leaf B having two knuckle forming tongues A.- W. STIPEK, rolled upon themselves lapped upon the body JAMES SHEPARD.
