- sLlolNe-foo'oa Loc-KQ SPECIFICATION forming pm of nttersratenz No. sa'eoaedtea october 16,1894.
Application mea nach 1e, 1894. serian. toetst. "(Nomoaei.)
To all whom, it mag/concern:
\ Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. JOHNSON; a
i citizen'of the United States of America, residing at Coon Rapids, in the county of Car- *5 roll,' and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Reversible Door-Latch for Sliding Doors, of which the following' is a speciea-- tion.
The objects of my invention are toproduce.
I0 a simple, cheap and durable device adapted to be attached to sliding doors and capable of being latchedor unlatched from yeither side of the door and adapted to be locked from the inside, and my object is further to provide a` I5 latch and lock that may be applied to either side of a door."
With these objects in view my invention consists in certain details in theconstruction,
arrangement and combination of the various- 2 0 parts of the device as hereinafter set forth,
. 3 the reference letter A is used to designate a sliding door and A a like door. adaptedv to meet the inner edge ofthe rst.
B designates the lock frame preferably coinposed of metal; plates and provided. with B? whereby it "maybe secured to a door. C is a shaft extended transversely through i lsaidframe and of a length adaptingA it to be passedV through an opening in the dooi` A and #4b having a knob or handle C2 secured thereto whereby it maybe turned.- D designates a lever fixed tothe shaft C within the frame having its upper end bifur-v cated and ahandle D2 formed on its lower end I `45 to project belowthe frame of the latchfto pro# vide means whereby the latch may be operated. .l
The'latch proper designated by the refer ence letterF is extended transversely through 5 the frame and is provided with a hook F2 on each end sothat when 'thel latch is reversed either end may be used.
Fig. 3
. in a reversedfposition.
Trame, a latch having a hook. formedv on its designates a device adapted to be'seeured `to astationary sZ'pport'or toa doorl in prox= imityyto the edg' of the. door to which the 55 latch is attached and is adapted to admit the sliding latch and holdl .it therein until it is elevated and drawn backwardly. J designates aguide consisting of astraigh t rod. extended transversely through the frame 6.9 of thedevice and above the latch Fi near its rear end. This guide is positioned so as to" hold the rear end vof the latch' downward when its central portion is elevatedby turning the knob' and thereby elevate the forward 5g lend so as toraise it above the device that'y rthehook engages and allow it to be lowered to engage said device when in an extended' position. An opening .l2 is provided at the other side ofthe center of the latch frame to. 7b
also through the lever D so as to prevent as y' movement ofthe latch. Y'A similar -bore K3 is .provided at the opposite 'side ofthe latch frame to be used wheny the device is `employed` Having thus described my invention, what So I claim as new therein, and desire to'secure by Lettersv latent .of the United States thereforis o l. An improved latch for sliding doors, comi prising a suitable frame adapted' to be se- 85 cured to a sliding doo-r, a shaft extended through `said frame and door', aknob on its outer end, a lever fixed to saidjrock shaft A( with its inner end projecting below the latch 9.0 forward endextended horizontally through the device and pivotally attached 'to the up. per end of said leverjsomedistance above .its pivotal point,- a rod extended vtransversely through the frame of the deviceabove -the rear end of the latch for the purposes stated and a device secured to a stationary upright andadapted to be engaged by said latch substantially as and for the purposes stated.
' Y 2. An improved latch and lock for sliding doors comprising a suitable frameadapted t'o be secured to a sliding door, ashaft extended through said frame and door, a knob on the outer end; a lever fixed to said rock shaft with its inner end projectieg;r below the latch frame, a latch having a hook formed on its forward end yextended horizontally. through the device and pivotaily attached to the upper end of said lever solne'dist'ance above its pivotal point, a rod extended transversely through the frame of the device abovcthe rear end of the latch for the purposes stated, and a device secured to a stationary upright adapted to be engaged by said latch and a bolt or rod adapted to be passed through the frame and the handle of saidlever when the latch ia in engagement with" the said device `Secured to the statienarnprght, to lock the doot-e, substantially aa sei; forth. t An improved latch and lock for sliding doors, comprising a suitable `frame adapted to 4he secured to a slicing door, a shaft extended through Said frame and door a knob on its outer end, alever fixed to said rock shaft with its in'ner end projecting below the frame, a latch having a hook formed on both of its ends extended horizontally through the device and pivotaliy attached to the upper end of said lever some distance above the pivotal point, a guide adapted to be extended through the frame directly above either end of the latch for the purposes stated and a holt adapted to bepassed through the frame and said lever when locked with either end of the latch projection and a device adapted Vto be engaged by said latch, substantialiy as and for the purposes stated.
