Description

UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
ISAAC NEWHALL, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED lINNER SOLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,737, dated February 20, 1866.
a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a new and improved inner sole especially'intended for use in boots and shoes the soles of which are attached to the uppers by means of sewing or stitching; and it consists in forming the body or main portion of the inner sole of leather scraps or iillings, so called, attached together one upon the other by means of paste, glue, cement, or other suitable adhesive material, until the proper thickness is obtained, over which, upon either one or both of its sides, a covering or coating of paper, card-board, or other similar material is placed and secured thereto by any suitable cement or other adhesive material, or in any other proper manner, whereby a much cheaperinner soleisobtained than by the ordinary mode heretofore practiced of forming the same, besides being much more effectual and adaptable to its purpose, no cutting of the upper being caused by it, it being extremely light, and in many other respects superior to the inner soles heretofore used.
In accompanying plate of drawings my improved inner sole is illustrated, figure 1 being a plan view of the same, and Fig. 2 a side or edge View.
This inner sole, A, is formed by taking one or more layers of leather scraps or 'iillings, so called, laying them one upon the other nntil the proper thickness is obtained, the several layers of the same being secured together by paste, glue, or other suitable adhesive ma.
terial, thus forming the body or main portion a of the inner sole, when upon and over both of its outer surfaces, or only one, if so desired, a coating or covering` of paper, @,rpasteboard, card-board, or other similar material, is applied and attached thereto by paste or other suitable adhesive material, or in any other proper manner, completing the same and making it ready for use for the purpose for which it is intended, the paper covering forming a very smooth and even surface, and` the inner sole possessing, as is obvious, all the many advantages hereinbefore stated for it.
Vhat I claim' as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y An inner sole for boots and shoes, formed of leather scraps or fillings coated or covered either upon one or both of its sides with a covering of paper or other similar material, substantially as herein described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 7th day of November, 1865.
