UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
. GEORGE ERANDER, OE SUTHEELAND, IOWA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,264, dated October 9, 1894. Application filed December 15, 1893. Serial Nef/193,794. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE BEANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sutherland, in the county of OBrien and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WashingiMachines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as `will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
t and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon, which `form a part of this specification.
washing-machines and has for its object to combine with a tub having independently adjustable rollers, a convenient form of stove for applying heat to the tub. i
A second Object of Athe invention is provide the receptacle, containing the iclothes, with an inner perforated false bottom, on which the clothes rest in the process of washing. The false bottom, referred to, is suitably perforated to permit the dirt and sediment,
pressed from the clothes during the ope1'a tion of washing, to escape, or settle to the bottom of the tulo.
I employ as the washing device two conical, uted rollers, pivoted radially in said tub in `position to rotate upon their own axes, and by rotating the tub, by means ofthe mechanism hereinafter described or its equivalent, bring all of the clothes contained in the tub successively under both of said rollers.
I attain the above purposes by the mechan-` ismillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of my invention, with a portion of `011e side of the tub removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the device as illustrated in Fig. 1
Similar letters and figures refer to similar parts in each View.
The general frame of the machine consists of suitably braced, ivertical, parallel standards AMA. A cross-bar C, removably seated i in vertical slots 11, formed in the upperends of the standards A, forms the brace for the upper portion of the frame, and serves to suspend two frames D-D The latter frames `are attached to the cross-bar C by means of My invention relates to an improvement in seated on each of the rods E coiled springs G, which permit the vertical oscillation of said frames D, and bymeans of the nuts B, the pressure of springs G on frames D can be regulated as desired. A verticalshaft H is rigidly seated, at its upper end, centrally in said bar C, and extends downward, and suitably stepped at its base in the center of the tub J. That portion of the Vshaft H below the-bar C is formed of two parallel `rods Kf-K, and twoshort eye or hook bolts L are seated a short distance apart in the inner side of the frames D--D, with their eyes or hooks 2 encircling the rods K, and thereby `adapted to permit of the vertical movement and lateral oscillation of the frames D, to permit the rollersM to adj ust themselves to the uneven surface of the clothes. The rollers M are of a conical, longitudinal, iiuted formation, and are pivotally seatedradially,
with their smaller ends toward the center, in the `bottom of the frames D,respectively.
The tub J is rigidly seated centrally on the upper end of a short vertical shaft N, the latter being pivotally journaled in the crossplate O of the frame of the machine, and provided at its lower extremity, beneath plate O, with a beveled gear P. e
A rotating shaft R is j ournaled tran sversely in the frame A below the tub J, and provided with a suitable crank arm R', and provided near its center with a beveled pinion S, adapted to engagel and actuate the gear P, and thereby communicate rotation to the tub J.
T is a perforated false bottom in the tub J, suitably supported a slight distance above the bottom of said tub, and the clothes to be washed are placed in said tub upon the bottom T and between the latter and the rollers M. By providing the plate with a central opening of the same diameter as the diamete of the lower end` of the shaft, the plate will also act as a means for securing the lower end of the shaft, which may pass loosely therethrough and rest upon the bottom of the tub. The rotation of thetub .T causes the `rollers M to traverse the entii'einner area of said tub, pressing the clothes meanwhile back and forth through the hot water in the` latter.
By forming the shaft of the machine with Vertical rods A and mounting the roller carrying frames thereupon, eachindependently of the other, the capacity o f. the machine is doubled andthe rollers are'eaeh permitted to rise or fall according to the particular amount of clothing under each, irrespective ofthe amount under the other.
The bar C is removably seatedin the frame of the machine, so that it and the frames D may be together lifted from the tub for the purpose of placingthe clothes in the latter, or removing them therefrom. Y
I f preferred, the rotating shaft R may be suitably connected to a wind-mill, or other actuating machinery.
' In addition to the above named advantages, a further advantage in my invention is that ure of each of the rollers M, and the dirt isremoved by the continuous passageof the hot water and steam through the clothes, the detached dirt dropping down through the per- Vforations in the removable bottom T to and upon the normalbottom of the tub, from whence itcan be'readily removed by taking out the bottom T.
What I claim as my invention, anmdndesir'eV to secure by Letters Patent of the United states,- is- In a washing machine, the combination, with a frame, of a brace secured to the upper portion thereof,'a rotatable tub upon the frame, a vertical shaft having its upper end rigidly secured to the brace and its lower end set in the bottom of the tub, and its central portion formed of vtwo parallel rods, two roller frames suspended from the brace, one upon each side of the Vertical shaft, and movabl'y secured to its respective rod, and means for operating the tub, substantially as set forth.- f In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE BRANDR.
