UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTINSON CRAMBY, OF BRADFORD, ENGLAND.
APPARATUS FOR CUTTING PATTERNS FOR CLOTH, 80o.
SEEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters P Application filed January 25, 1894:. Serial No. 498,055.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTINSON CRAMBY,a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Bradford, in the county of York, England, have invented certain Improvements in Apparatus for Cutting Patterns from Cloth and Like Materials, (for which a patent has been granted to me by the Government of Great Britain and Ireland, No. 8,188, dated August 2,1893,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the cutting of cloth and like materials into small pieces suitable for patterns, with greater facility than hitherto.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will describe the same in detail by making reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved apparatus; Fig. 2, a plan of the same; Fig. 3, a front view, and Figs. 4 and 5 en'- The frame of the machine is indicated by the letter A, and is suitable for standing upon a table or other support. To the said frame are secured brackets B, B, supportingshaft 0, having one or more rotating knives D, secured thereon. To the said brackets B, B, I secure the arms E, E, carrying a bar F, to which are secured the arms G, each arm having a guide rollerH mounted thereon. These rollers bear on the material and act to guide it under the edge of the knife. The before mentioned shaft 0 is provided with a spur wheel J, gearing into spur wheel K secured on the supporting roller-L, upon the end of which is loosely mounted a hand wheel M,having a chain wheel M mounted on the boss of same and which is connected to chain wheel M secured on shaft 0 by driving chain M Upon operating the hand wheel M, the shaft 0 is driven by the chain M and the supporting roller L, is driven through the spur gearing J and K. To the opposite end of the roller L, I secure a chain wheel L. A similar wheel is secured on the roller 0, and the two wheels connected together by chain L thus insuring a constant feed to the cut ting knives in the manner as hereinafter described.
The material to be cut into patterns is sup ported and carried to the rotating knives D by the traveling bands N, passing round the atent No. 527,051, dated October 9, 1894. (No model.) Patented in England August 2, 1893,1To. 8,188.
rollers O, O and 'L, when it is cut by the rotating knives D into longitudinal strips. The material is carried forward and delivered-onto the table P, above which is an adjustable cutting knife Q, secured on shaft R, supported by movable bracket S, free to slide on cross bars T,T, secured to the sleeves U, U, on the upright studs U U. On the said shaft R, is secured the pinion V gearing into rack V also secured to the sleeves, U, U. To the before mentioned sleeves U, U, are attached the links W, W, the opposite ends being respectively connected to levers W, W, secured to the shaft W passing across the machine. One of the said levers W is extended, terminating with a handle X. Upon turning the lever by the said handle to the position shown by dotted lines, the sleeves U, U, rack V and traveling cutting knife Q in connection therewith are lowered to such an extent as to bring the presser plate Y on to the material resting on the table P. Upon turning the hand lever B secured on shaft R, the knife Q receives a rotary and traveling motion, thereby cutting the material in a transverse direction by the rotating 8o circular knife Q.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In combination, in a pattern cutting machine, the series of cutters D, the means for feeding the material thereto, the cutter Q arranged to travel transversely of the cutters D, the carriage for said cutter, the horizontal ways upon which the carriage moves, the vertical ways at the ends of the horizontal ways and along which thesaid horizontal 0 ways may be guided vertically and the means for raising and lowering the said horizontal ways with the cutter, substantially as described.
2. In a pattern cutting machine the com- 5 bination of the traveling cutting knife Q, pinion V rack V presser plate Y with the links W, W, and operating means therefor all arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
