AUTOMATIC WATER-METER.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,046, dated October 9, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE CHAFFEY, consulting engineer, a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Mildura, in the British Colony of Victoria, have invented a certain new and useful Automatic Water-Meter, the following being a specification of my invention.
This invention consists of an automatic water meter designed mainly for use in controlling and delivering automatically a predetermined head of water (four (4) inches or thereabout) that is to supply an irrigation channel such head being maintained no matter what head of water may be in the supply channel. This meter may also be employed in water channels generally.
The apparatus is essentially composed of a box having an inlet at one end controlled by a butterfly valve that is governedby a water balance lever and at the other'end an outlet controlled by a slide, the inlet opening being larger in area than the outlet.
In the attached drawings I illustrate my automatic water meter.

The inlet opening B is preferably located near the bottom of a cross plate A at one end of the wooden meter box A and which end receives the supply of water from its source while the outlet opening C is formed in a cross plate A2 at the other or delivery end of said box. C is a slide plate fitted in grooves at top and bottom of said outlet opening, C2 being a handle for the slide said handle projecting into the small upper pocket A3. At one side of the said box is the pocket D within which a regulating pan D is arranged and into which latter the water from the box flows over a sill a of proper height when the water in the meter box rises to the height of the upper edge of the delivery opening C. Said regulating pan has a small outlet orifice d at its one end governed by an adjustable slide d while the pan itself is suspended from one arm of a beam E whose knife edge bearings e are supported on the sides of the box and pocket at @2.(12. Thev other arm of the said beam E is at its end connected by a rod E with the butteriiy valve B also an adjustable balance Weight E2 is arranged on this end of beam.
Upon the upper edge of the outlet opening is an indicator so that the slide may be set to allow the desired volume of water to pass through. The whole apparatus maybe closed in and locked to prevent its being tampered with.
The operation of the automatic water meter is as folloWs:-Water being admitted to the box through thelinlet opening B the wa- Lter if a sufficient volume is iowing will rise therein until it overflows over the sill o. to the regulating pan D and which becoming weighted by its contained water, weighs down the beam E the rising of the other end of which closes the butterliy valve'B and so closes or partially closes for the time being the supply opening B to the meter box. Then the water gradually runs from the pan D through its outlet orifice d and the beam E again assumes its normal horizontal position and opens the butterfly valve B.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf 1. In Ycombination the casing having the inlet port, the valve therefor, the cross plate C, the overflow pocket D, the discharge opening through the cross plate C, the lever connected with the valve, the device carried thereby and arranged in the overflow pocket to be operated by the rise of water in the casing and the sill a arranged to direct the water to the said pocket, substantially as described.
2. In a water meter the combination of a. box such as A having pockets such as D and A3 with the butterfly valve B at inlet opening, the balanced beam such as E carrying regulating pan such as D furnished with slide d and orifice d and with the outlet opening C preferably furnished with a. slide such I o as C substantially as herein described and as illustrated in my drawings.
