POINTSMANS INDICATOR FOR RAILWAYS.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, JOHN LORD, residing at Wilmslow, in the county of Chester, and THOMAS ROBERT LEASON, residing at Levenshulme, Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented an Improved Pointsmans Check and Indicator for Railways, (which was patented in England July 23, 1891,No. 12,422,) of which the following is a specification.

This invention consists of an improved check or reminder to be permanently or removably connected to the handle of a railway pointsmans lever to remind him that the line, siding or bay to which the particular point worked by that lever is connected is blocked, in order to avoid accidents caused by inadvertently turning an engine truck, carriage, or train onto a line already occupied.

Figures 1 and 2 on the annexed drawings are side and front elevations of a pointsmans lever showing the application thereto of our invention in such a form that the pointsman himself works the check or reminder at his discretion. Fig; 3' shows a modification in the form of the check or reminder.

The improved check or reminder (see Figs. 1 and 2) consists of a metal disk or plate a which is hinged to a split tube or cap I) fixed on the handle of the lever c and preferably made with a spring catch, and pointed red inside (or marked Block or both). When the pointsman forces back the handle into the position drawn in full lines at Figs. 1 and 2, so as to turn a train, engine or carriage onto the corresponding line, siding or bay,

he can, if he wishes, independently of the .movement of the lever, release the catch by pressing upon the button or push d, and the red disk or plate a will immediately spring up and thus give an additional warning, that the line, siding, or bay corresponding with that particular lever is blocked or occupied. On receiving t-he signal line clear or having otherwise disposed of the obstacle he puts the lever 0 back again into the dotted position (Fig. 1), and in doing so he can press down the red disk or plate a with his hand, and the said disk or plate will then be held down by the spring catch until again released.

At Fig. 3 are shown two front views of a lever in the two positions, showing a plate 6 in the shape of a semaphore acting in place of the disk-shaped plate a.

We claim as our invention-- 1. A check or reminder for pointsmen, consisting of a hinged plate connected to the handle of the pointsmans lever, and adapted to be opened or closed by hand at the discretion of the pointsman independently of the movement of the lever, substantially as set forth.

2. A check or reminder for pointsmen, consisting of a hinged plate connected to the handle of the pointsmans lever a catch for the plate, and a button to operate the catch, substantially as described.
