ELECTRICAL CUT-OUT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,563, dated September 4, 1894.
Application filed May 10, 1894. Serial No. 510,823. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, AUc-Us'r RooKoEE, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Electrical Cut-Outs, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement is particularly useful in connection with a portable electric lamp which I have invented.
I will describe aout-out embodying my improvement and then point out the novel features in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side View of a cut-out embodyiny my improvement. Fig. 2 is another side View but in a plane at right angles to the former.
Fig. 3 is a side View of 'one of the parts of the cut-ont detached. Fig. 4 is aside View ofthe part illustrated in Fig. 3but is taken in a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an end View of one part of the cut-out. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section at the plane of the dotted line 6, 6, Fig. l, of acomplete cutont. Fig. 7 is a partial side view and partial inside face view and partial section of one part of the cut-out. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section of the cut-out, at the plane of the dotted line 8, 8, Fig. 6.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates a cut-out, which may be made of any suitable material. Soapstone will be found to be a good material. As shown, it is made in three parts, one of which is a base block a, and the two others of which are socket pieces d', d2. The latter may be secured to the former by means of screw bolts a3. The two socket pieces are counterparts of each other. Externally they may be made of any desirable form. Internally they have semi-cylindrical sockets a", a5, which are divided into two compartments, a4 and a5, the lower, a4, being of larger diameter than the upper and containing metal springs a6. In each socket there is a partition a7 between its lower and upper compartments. The bottom of the lower compartment 0.4 has a semicylindrical hole as, and the outer extremity of the upper compartment has a rabbet or groove a9. The spring a6 of the compartment a4 of each socket a4, a5, may be secured in place by a screw c1", which passes through to the exterior and secures in place a metal plate au; The metal plate all of each socket piece, is preferably located in an external recess al?. Each socket piece is also provided externally with a similar metal plate als located in a similar recess n.14. A screw` L15 passing through the socket piece from the inside, to said plate` may be used to secure the latter in place. Between these two recesses dl and a, a groove al, is formed externally in each socket piece to receive afusible metal wire orconductor a. This wire is intended to be secured to the two metal plates truand als, and it may advantageously have hooked ends so as to be readily fastened to the plates by screws als, and 0,19. The plate als is provided with a screw d20 for the securing of the line wire. The two line wires of the circuit, therefore, extend to the two plates cl3, and the circuit extends thence through the fusible wires to the plates d, and thence to the springs a6. l
B designates a connecting piece, consisting of a body b, adapted to fit the sockets in the socket pieces a', 0.2, but constructed in such a waythatit may extendbeyond the same. Its body has a portion b', which is adapted to t snugly across the compartments a5 of the socket pieces, and adjacent thereto it has a hub b2, which is of a size to fit in the rabbets a of the socket pieces. Its lower extremity is adapted to lit in the holes as in the bottom of the lower or inner compartment a4. Thus the connecting piece has two bearings in the socket pieces.
B', B2, designate two plates attached to opposite sides of that portion of the connecting piece B, which lits within the socket pieces c a2. Each has a flat portion b3- which tits against the portion b of the connecting piece, a stem-like portion b4, extending beyond such Hat portion, and a tooth, or projecting p0rtion, h5, at the end of the latter. The toothlike portions are on diametrically opposite sides of the connecting piece and when the connecting piece is tted to the socket pieces, are opposite the lower or inner compartment a4 and the springs a6. The partitions a7 between the lower and upper compartments a4, 0.5, are cut away so as to permit of the toothlike portions h5 of the plates B', B2, to pass through when the connecting piece is suitvSo IOO
ably turned. After the connecting piece shall have been thus introduced, it is to be turned so as to bring the tootl11ike portions vb5 of the plates B', B2, into contact with the springs a6. This may be done by a halt' turn of the connecting piece. Preferably the springs a will be so constructed that the connecting piece cannot be rotated more than a half turn. The circuit will, of course, be continued from the springs as to the plates B', B2. The latter may be secured to the connecting piece by means of screws b, extending through their plate like portions into the portion h of the connecting piece B. In the outer portion of the connecting piece is a longitudinal cavity 67, into which pass two wires comprised in a cable C, which latter may be used for any purpose or may extend to the hand piece for a portable electric lamp. These wires form a continuation of the circuit. Their ends are bared of insulating material and are passed down through holes in the bottom of the cavity bl and are secured to screws D8 that engage with the plates B B2.
W'hat I claim as my invention, and to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A cut-out having a socket comprising two compartments, spring contact pieces in the lower or inner compartment, plates on its exterior, and fusible wire or conductor between said plates, substantially as specified.
2. A cnt-out having a socket comprising two compartments, spring contact pieces in the inner compartment, a rabbeted bearing in the outer compartment, plates on its eXterior, and fusible wire or conductor between said plates, substantially as specified.

The combination with a cut-out having a socket comprising two compartments with a partition between them, and contact pieces in the inner or lower compartment, of a connecting piece havinga body of insulating material comprising a portion adapted to fit the outer compartment, and metal plates having tooth-like projections for entering the inner or lower compartment and impinging against the contact pieces, substantially as specified.
5. The combination with a cut-out having a socket comprising two compartments with a partition between them and contact pieces in the inner or lower compartment, of a connecting piece having a body of insulatingr material comprising a portion adapted to fit the outer compartment, and metal plates having tooth-like projections for entering the inner or lower compartment and impinging against the contact pieces, the cut-out having a fusible wire or conductor on its exterior and in circuit with one of said contact pieces, suhstantially as specified.
