- G. GARTON.
OAR LOOK.
No 525,099. Paten ted Aug. 28, 1894.
iiiiiiiiiii NITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
GEORGE GARTON, OF MILLVILLE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HARRY MURPHY, OF SAME PLACE.
OAR-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,099, dated August 28, 1894.
7 Application filed May 3, 1894. Serial No. 510,004:- (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE GARTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millville, in the county of Cumberland and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Row-Locks, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention has for its object to provide a convenient and simple arrangement for rowlocks whereby they can be easily and securely fastened and unfastened and removed with great rapidity and can be operated in the dark as well as in the light.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents my rowlock complete and in position upon the gunwale of a boat. Fig. 2 represents an inside longitudinal view showing the relation of the different parts. Fig. 8 represents the base plate. Fig. 4 represents a horizontal view of the base of my rowlock.
Referring to the several figures wherein 7 like letters indicate like parts G. represents the gunwale of a boat to which is rigidly attached by screws a. or otherwise, the base plate Z and the cap K K. which base plate Z and cap K K can be cast solid, but I prefer them made separate. The base plate Z is provided with a pin W situated in the center as near as may be. The cap K K is provided with a slot between the letters F F. extending from the inside edge partially across to a point that allows the stem Y. to enter as far as groove S. Fig. 4.will permit when engaged with pin W. The horns c. flange P. stem Y. and base X are cast solid. The base X has a groove S in the bottom as shown in Fig. 4.
extending from the outer edge partially across to a point that will 'allow the pin W torest 40 in the center. j The flange P. rests upon the cap K K. The stem Y. enters the slot between the letters F F. incap K K. The base X rests upon the plate Z. The groove S. ongages the pin W. The rowlock can only be 5 put in position by first engaging the open end of groove S. with pin W. pushing the rowlock until the stem Y. enters the full length of the slot between the letters F F. of cap K K. when the pin W will be in the center of the base X. Then, by turning the rowlock half way around, or until the open end of the groove in the base shows from the inside of the boat as per Fig. 1. and it will be. securely fastened. To unfasten, reverse the above.
Having described my invention, what I- claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an oar lock, the combination of the base plate having the pin W, the slotted cap K adapted to be secured to the base-plate and to the gunwale of a boat, with the oar lock having horns c, flange P, stem Y, and base X, said base having a groove S adapted to receive the pinW, and said slotted cap adapted to receive the stem Y of the oar lock, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE GARTON. [L. s.]
