SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 524,227, dated August '7, 1894. Application filed May 3, 1894. Serial No. 509.978- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED STEINER, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Receipt-Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 7

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved receipt protector, designed to conveniently cover up portions of a leaf in a receiptor other .book or article to prevent readingof already executed receipts or other matter by other parties.

The invention consists principally of a series of movable cover or shield plates independent one of the other and adapted to each cover a portion of aleaf of a book or other article.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, with parts in an open position Fig. 3 is a front perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 4. is a similar View of the same, with parts in an open or unlocked position. Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse section of the improvement. The improved receipt book is provided with a sheet A, preferably made of thin metal, and of a size corresponding approximately to the size of the leavesin the book or other article on which the device is to be used. On one side of the sheet A are pivoted or hinged aseries of covering or shield plates B B, B arranged in such a manner on their hinge O as to have an independent movement one of the other, to permit of swinging these covering or shield plates B, B or B on one side or the other of the sheet A. The size of the plates B, B, B? depends on the size of the receipt printed or otherwise arranged on each side of by a guideway F arranged on the of the sheet A, next to the hinge the sheet A, to fasten thelock a leaf, that is to say, it four blank receipts are printed on each face of a leaf in the book, then gage a guideway D, secured on a rear face of the sheet A opposite the hinge O,'as plainly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Each plate B, B, B is also provided on its free end with an upturned projection 13, adapted to engage a slot E in a guideway E, secured on the front face of thesheet Aoppositetherhinge C, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 4.

Thus when the plates B, B, B are on the back of the sheet A, then their lugs B engage the guideway D, so as to be locked in position on the sheet A, and when the said plates B, B, B are swung to the front face of the sheet A, and

closed as illustrated in Figs. 3,and 4, then the upturned lugs D engage the slots E in the guideway E. This guideway E is also adapted to receive one side of a. leaf. Goffthe book, the other side of the said leaf being engaged front face illustrated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5.

Now, in order to lock the plates B, B, B in position when sprung upon the receipts over the front face of the sheet A, at a time when the lugs B engage the slots E, I provide a lock bar H, preferably made u-shape in cross section, and. hinged at H to one side of the sheet A, in alignment with the guideways D and E. The free end of this look bar H is adapted to be fastened in place by a button I, mounted to turn on the sheet A, and formed with recesses I adapted to be engaged by a suitable key so as to conveniently turn the said button I, to engage thefree end of the lock bar H to fasten the same in place;

The button I, is provided on its shank with'a second button I arranged on the front face of the sheet A, and this button I is likewise provided with recesses adapted to be engaged by the key for manipulating the button I, so as to turn the latter from the front face of bar H in po- 'sition. The sheet A is formed on. the back O, as plainly I with a pocket A adapted to receive the under side or flange of the lock bar H to prevent the latter from catching onto the leaf of the book or other part.

The device is used as follows: When first using it on an empty leaf of the book, the operator fastens the several plates B, B, B on the rear face of the sheet A, by springing the lugs 13 in the guideway D, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The leaf G of the book is then slipped under the guideways E and F, as iilustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, and then the operator takes the book with the exposed blank re ceipt on the front face of the sheet A to a customer, and receives the signature of this customer on the first receipt on the top of the leaf G. When this is done, the operator in charge of the book unlocks the lock bar H,

swings the same outward into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and then takes the first plate B and disengages its lug B from the guideway D, so as to permit of swinging this leaf to the front and over the executed receipt, at the same time engaging the lug B in the first slot E, and then the operator swings the lock bar H inward, and turns either the button I or I to fasten the lock bar H in place. It will be seen that this plate B now covers the executed receipt, so that when'the operator comes with the book to the second customer to get a receipt on the second blank receipt on the leaf, then this customercannot read the first executed receipt. After the second receipt is taken, the operator takes the second plate B, unlocks'it from the back of the sheet A, swings it over to the front, unlocks the bar H to engage this plate B with its lug B and a slot E, and then again closes the lock bar H and fastens the same in place. This operation is repeated on each leaf after a receipt is signed, it being understood that the device may, be readily transferred from one leaf of the book to another in the manner already described.

In case the leaves are printed on both sides, then the operator simply reverses the position of the sheet A on the leaf, so as to bring the plates B, B and B over the receipts successively, commencing at the top of the leaf. It is further understood that if the leaf G contains only four blank receipts on a page, then the three plates B, B and B only are necessary, as the last receipt need: not be covered by a plate, because the operator then turns this leaf over so as to hide the executed page from the view of the next customer.

As illustrated in Fig. 6, the device is artion of the leaf K of the book, as plainly shown in the said Fig-6, the said frame J being provided at its inner end with a hinge L, on which is pivoted a skeleton frame N,

provided with the side bars N and N and an end bar N having a guideway N adapted to receive the free ends of plates 0, for 00V- ering the individual receipts on the leaf K. Thus, when a receipt is to be covered, the operator swings the respective plate() from the skeleton frame N over upon the receipt, and

locks the same in place bya lock bar P similar in construction to the lock bar H.

' Now,in order to prevent customers from examining the already executed number of leaves in the book, I provide a band R, adapted to pass over the executed leaves and front cover of the book, as plainly shown inv Figs. 4 and 7, the said band being connected rigidly at one end with a buckle plate R, while the other end is held loosely in the said buckle plate and passes under an arm R forming an integral part of the said plate B. This arm R is formed with a tongue R adapted to be engaged at its free end by a button R, to press the said tongue downward in firm contact with the free end of the band B, to lock the latter in place. Thebut'ton R is operated by the same key employed for turning the buttons I and 1 Now, it will be seen that when a leaf is executed, then the operator in charge of the book turns the button R to loosen the tongue R to permit of slackening the band B so as to permit of inserting this executed leaf under the band, after which the latter is drawn and described.

2. A receipt protector, comprising asheet or frame, and a series of covering or shieldin g plates hinged independently one from the other on the said sheet, each plate being adapted to cover up part of a leaf, substantially as shown and described.

3. A receipt protector, comprising a sheet or frame, a series of covering or shielding plates hinged independently one from the other on the said sheet, each plate being adapted to cover up part of a leaf, and means for locking the said plates on the back of the sheet, substantially as shown and described.

4. A receipt protector, comprising a sheet or frame, a series of covering or shielding plates hinged independently one from the other on the said sheet, each plate being adapted to cover up part of a leaf, and means,

substantially as described, for locking the said plates on the front of the sheet, as set forth.

5. A receipt protector, comprising a sheet orframe formed with guideways adapted to receive a leaf, a series of covering or shielding plates hinged on the said sheet and adapted to be swung from the back of the sheet to the front thereof, and means, substantially as described, for locking the said plates in either position, as set forth.

6. A receipt protector, comprising a sheet or frame having guideways for a leaf, a hinge on one side ofthe said sheet, a series of plates hung independently'on the said hinge, a guideway on the back of the sheet adapted to be engaged bya projection from the free end of each plate, and an lip-turned projection on the free end of each plate, to engage a corresponding slot in the guideway on the front of the said sheet, substantially as shown and described.

7. A receipt protector, comprising a sheet or frame having guideways for a leaf, a hinge on one side of the said sheet, a series of plates hung independently on the said hinge, a guide way on the back of the sheet adapted to be engaged by a projection from the free end of each plate, an up-turned projection on the free end of each plate, to engage a corresponding slot in the guideway on the front of the said sheet, and a lock bar for engaging the free ends of the said plates on the front of the sheet, to fasten the platesin position, substantially as shown and described.

8. A receipt protector, comprising a sheet or frame, having guideways for a leaf, a hinge on one side of the said sheet, a seriesof plates hung independently on the said hinge,a guideway on the back of the sheet adapted to be engaged by a projection on the free end of each plate, an up-turned projection on the free end of each plate, to engage a correspond ing slot in the guideway on the front of the said sheet, a lock bar for engaging the free ends of the said plates on the front of the sheet, to fasten the plates in position, and a double button adapted to be operated from either face of the sheet and serving to fasten thelockingbar in place, substantially as shown and described.
