Description

(No Model.) I
J. MARIS.
POINTBAND FOR VEHICLE HUBS. No. 524,027. Patented Aug. '7, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JARED MARIS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
POINT-BAND FOR VEHlCLE-HUBS.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 524,027, dated August 7, 1894.
Application filed June 22, 1893. Serial No. 473,466. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be 1t known that I, JARED MARIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of 'C1nc1nnati,county of Hamilton, and State of -of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in polnt bands for vehicle hubs and dust caps and ornamental linings with their various combinations as hereinafter more fully'described and set forth in the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates more particularly to bands formed out of previously prepared tubes of either sheet metal or casting.
The feature I claim as novel and valuable is the making of bands with a groove on the Inside and corresponding bead or collar on the outside near the front end of the band like those point bands that are cast and turned but have no corresponding groove inside and being solid and turned are necessarily very expensive and heavy.
My purpose is to furnish a point band that is stronger for its weight, handsomer, lighter and cheaper than any now made, and that combines more features of utility than any other known to me; some of which are strength, produced by the various angles and ovals made in shaping it: also the forming of a head or collar for a step in making an internal groove or channel to receive catches to lock either dust caps or ornamental linings in place.
In order that others may be able to construct these bands who are skilled in the art I submit but do not confine myself strictly to the following process.
Take any metallic tube of proper dimenshown in drawings, all of which is fully pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a view in section of my improved point band in which A is the band,
I) the collar, 0 the groove, (1 the abutment over which dust cap dogs or springs lock and f is the flap or attached nail which fastens the bands on the hub. Fig. 2 represents in perspective my improved point band with dust cap in place, A being the band, y the dust cap and z the clutches locked in the groove 0.
I do not wish to confine myself strictly to' the above but to claim whatever comes legitimately within the scope of my invention.
What I do claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a metal point-band for hubs, having a circumferential bead near its outer end adapted to serve as a step, and an internal groove, coincident with the bead, tdreceive the fastenings of a dust cap, substantially as shown and described.
2. A point band composed of a metallic tube when made with an internal groove and a corresponding external bead and having the front end of the band crimped down by dies or rollers.
