Be it knownthat I, MOSES BENSINGER, a citi- 'zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, 1n the county of. Cook and State of Illinois,

have inventedcertain new and useful Im-V provernents in Bar-Fixtures, of which the followlng 1s a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.

Myinvention relates to the counteror bar, and consists in the combination therewith of a novel arm rest or guard, by which liquids spllled on the top of the bar or counter are prevented from running over its forward edge and dripping down the front side of the bar, and by Which the ordinary arm rail supported upon brackets in front of the bar is rendered unnecessary. My invention also consists in .the combination of such guard and arm rest with the usual foot rail by means of interposed ornamental supporting brackets, all as will be hereinafter set forth and specifically pointed out in the claims.

A B represent a bar of the usual or any suitable construction, consisting of the horizontal top or counter A and the vertical portion B which supports the top.

My combined arm rest and guargQis se cured to the forward side of thetop ofigthe bar, either to the front edge of the horizontal portion A or upon the side of thelIl/icalportion B, and curved outwardly and upwardly therefrom, the rear edge of its upp'eslrface being flush with the top of the bar and forming a smooth tight joint therewith. It may be fastened to the bar by any suitable means, as by dowel pins D as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, where the guard is secured to the vertical portion B of the bar. In Fig. 4 I have shown it resting upon the horizontal top A of the bar, near its front edge, in which position it may be se which rest at their lower ends upon the usualv foot rail F and' extendl up the front side of the bar to the guard C. At their upper ends these brackets are curved to'fit the forward side of the guard C, and they are also preferably made to overlap its upper edge as shown. There may be as many of these brackets as desired. In the drawings I have shown a bar provided with one at either end and one in the middle, the bracket at the 'right inFig. l being the one located at the middle of the bar. y

It will be understood that the arm rest and guard C eXtends around the ends or sides of the bar, as well as along its front, and that there may be brackets E at the ends, or not, as desired.

For the purpose of affording a convenient place forr the patrons to place theircigars While standing at the bar, I provide the upper rounded edge of the guard C with a series of depressions or notches G at suitable intervals, inwhich cigars may be laid, without danger of theirrolling off on to the topof the bar in rear of Vthe guard or falling upon the floor in front of it.

I am aware that it has heretofore been proposed to provide the front and rear edges of a bar counter with flanges or ledges for the purpose of holding in position a perforated rubber mat placed upon/the counter, the top of the counter being inclined from front to rear so that liquids spilled upon the mat would pass through the holes in the latter and collect at the rear edge of the counter, whence they might be drained away by suitable pipes, as shown for instance in Patent No.`234,028 to Grout and Burk, dated November 2, 188D, but in such case neither the liange at theY for- Ward or at the rear edge of the counter top couldbe used as an arm-rest for supporting ICO the arms of the patrons above the mat and out of reach of the liquids spilled upon it, and as the counter top was inclined from front to rear the flange at the forward edge of the counter was not necessary for the purpose of preventing the escape of liquids over that edge of the bar. Under that construction the top of the mat formed the top of the counter and was ush with the upper edges of the front and rear flanges. The counter could not be conveniently used without the mat, for if it were removed the'ilangealong the rear edge of the bar would form an obstruction in the way of the attendant, and the inclination of the top of the counter would interfere with the easy handling of glasses upon it. Under my improved construction the top of the counter is perfectly smooth and horizontal, its rear edge is unobstructed, and

the combined arm-rest and guard along its forward edge operates to support the arms of the patrons entirely above and away from the top of the counter, ont of any danger of .be. ing soiled by the liquids spilled upon the latter, and at the same time prevents the escape of any liquids over the forward edge of the bar.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim- 1. In a bar fixture, the combination of the counter having the smooth horizontal top A with an unobstructed rear edge and provided with the arm-rest and guard C secured to and extending along the forward edge thereof and curved upwardly and outwardly therefrom, the foot-rail F, and the metal brackets E interposed between said rail and arm-rest Q, supported upon the former and assisting 1n supporting the latter, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. In a bar fixture, the combination, with the counter having the smooth horizontal top A with an unobstructed rear edge, of the armrest and guard C secured to and extending along the forward edge thereof, curved upwardly and outwardly therefrom and provided with the notches or depressions G iu its rounded upper edge, substantially as and for the purpose described.
