' A. G. WHITE.
FIRE ESCAPE.
No. 522,639. Patented July '10, 1894.
v fully described hereinafter.
UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDERSON WHITE, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 522,639, dated July 10, 1894, Application filed August 2, 1893. Serial No. 482,201. (Noinodeh) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDERsoN G. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alle-f gheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire -Escapes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the sameyreference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved fire escape apparatus, and it consists in a clamp adapted to engage with a rope, and a belt to engage with the said clamp, whereby a person may descend from a burning building in safety, together with certain details of construction, and combination of parts as will be In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved clamp, which is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side'elevation of the same. Fig. 3 isa perspective view of the belt used in connection with the said clamp.
To put my invention into practice I form a I clamp adapted to take a frictional hold on a wire rope of small diameter, said clamp consisting of two jaws 1" hinged together by a pin 2, and operated toward or away from each other by a threaded shaft 4 and hand wheel 9. This shaft 4 is provided with a ratchet wheel 5 and pawl 6 which will look the said shaft to prevent turning in one direction.
Arranged within the clamp are shoes 7 to grasp the rope, one of which is operated toward or away from the said rope by means of a screw 8, thereby'providinga means for using the clamp on large and small ropes. Attached to this clamp by means of short chains 12 is a stout hook 13 which is used as a connection with'a strong belt secured about the person. This belt 14. consists of a band having a snap hook 15 to join the ends together, and a number of other hooks 17 and rings 16 for attaching articles or other persons thereto. I H
In operation the belt 14 is secured about the person, and attached to the clamp by the hook 13. The rope is passed through the opening 3 of the clamp, and one end attached to any suitable object in the room. By manipulating the two screws 4 and 8 the person may be lowered down rapidly and safely.
Having thus described my invention, I I
' c1aim- The herein described fireescape consisting of the clamp 1 consisting of parts hinged together, the shaft 4 provided with a hand wheel and ratchet, the shoes 7 and screw 8,
the hook 13 attached to the said clamp, and
the belt fitted with a number of hooks and rings, all arranged and combined for service, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto affix my signature this 19th day of April, A. D. 1893.
ANDERSON G. WHITE.
