UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. LEMKE, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK A. POWELL, OF SAME PLACE.
HARNESS-SADDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 522,185, dated June 26, 1894.
Application filed July 28, 1893- Serial No. 481,770. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. LEMKE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have made a certain new and useful Cart-Saddle; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates as above specified, to saddles for use as part of a harness used for hitching to the ordinary dumping or twowheeled cart, the invention consisting of certain constructions hereinafter specified, and the novel parts will be fully set up in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device, showing same in the position when it is on the back of the draft animal. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a. section on the line-33, Fig. 2, showing the interior arrangement and the sectional contour. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4:4, Fig. 2, showing the contour and arrangement of parts'at that point. Fig. 5 is a detail of the hook-iron.
In the figures like reference marks indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
1 is the main body-piece of the saddle, and is made of leather, forming two flaps, one on each side, as shown in Figs. 1- and 2; straps 2 being secured to the ends thereof, formingv means for the attachment of the girth.
3 is thehook-iron whichis made of flat iron, bent in the form shown in Fig. 5 and having hooks 4: formed on its end by drawing same down and bending it into the desired hookform. A staple 5 is set in the apex or top portion thereof. This hook-iron 3 forms a stiffener for the saddle and holds it in the form in which it is adapted to fit best the back of the animal, the screw-threaded bolt 8 securing the rings 6 in place securing also the iron 3 in place, a bolt 7 co-operating therewith and passing through the piece 1 and the stiffening bar 9, hereinafter described. Cushionpads 10 are secured to the inner or bearing point of the flaps and may, in this construction, due to the stifiening hereinafter set up, be made as soft and pliable as desired, and of any size and shape. v
In order that the saddle may retain its form under strain and after considerable use, it is stiffened by the insertion between the pads 10 and the flaps 1, of metallic bars 9 extending transversely of the flaps, and bolted and riveted thereto in the most preferable manner, their ends being bent down against the flaps 1 in such a manner as to remove them from all danger of abrading the contacting elements. In making the saddle, these bars are bent to the form required to shape and hold the pads and flaps 1, and being, as before stated, secured to same, will hold them in any desired position, in addition to which,
the barsextending transversely of the girth or downward strain of the load on the saddle, will distribute the strain over the entire bearing surface of the pad, making the saddle easy of wearing and preventing the same from I rubbing the hide of the animal. With these bars, the saddle may be made of lighter leather, and be as strong and durable, if not more so even, than the ordinary construction.
This saddle may be made to conform to the back of any desired animal by applying the force necessary to change the curvature of the hook-iron or the stay-strips to the necessary extent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent of the United States,'is
A cart saddle consisting of the pads having leather backs sewed together at their upper ends, the hook iron further securing their upper ends together rigidly and extending downwardly along the outer side of each pad, and two bars secured to the leather back of each pad one near the upper and one near the lower end, lying transversely of the hook-iron extending to near the edges of the pad and bent to the curvature of the back of the animal,- substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
onAsfM. LEMKE.
