To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that l, WILLIAM H. R. ToYE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Phila-` delphia and State of Pennsylvaniahave invented anew and useful Improvement in Multicolor-Printing Machines, (for which a patent, No. 9,122, dated May 13, 1892, has been granted to me, with others, in Great Britaim) zo of which the following is atrue and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof. My invention relates to printing presses, particularly to such as are designed to print in colors, and hasV for its main object to provide a press wherein very exact register can be obtained, and consists mainly in a suitable construction of carrier device consisting of a number of separate blocks abutted end to zo end connected by a suitable band or bands,
some of which blocks are provided with gripper mechanisms for the purpose of seizing and carrying forward the sheet. My invention also consists in combining` a 2,5 suitable iexible carrier composed of separate links, some of which are toothed, with a printing couple having teeth, adapted to engage with the teeth on the carrier, and means, independent of the iiexible carrier, for driving 3o the printing couple; and further, in various improvements more specifically pointed out in the claims appended to and forming part of this specification.
Myinvention will be best understood as de- 3 5 scribed in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a multiple' color press embodying my invention; Fig. 2 an enlarged detail view of a portion of the flexible 4o carrier and the support therefor. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of one of the blocks, which go to make up the flexible carrier, on the line :nx of Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a side view of a press having but a single printing couple embodying my invention. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the press showing the gripper mechanisms attached to the carrier. Fig. 6 is a side view on an enlarged scale of one of the blocks which go to make up the flexible carrier, showing the means for taking up/any slack in the 5o bands which hold the carrier together, and also, the cam for operating the gripper mechanisms.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the frame of the machine in which is mounted the printing couple, consisting preferably of a type cylinder B and an impressioncylinder C. One or more pairs of said cylinders maybe employed, according to the number of colors to be printed, and each printing 6o cylinder is interchangeable in Aposition with its impression cylinder, owing to its being mounted on bearings or boxes BX, which are interchangeable and adj ustablein openings in the frame A on opposite sides of travel of the material on which theprintiug is to be done, so as to adapt it for work on either side of the sheet. Each printing cylinder is sup# plied with the proper inking rollers of any Well known or usualy construction, as shown 7c at D and E. The frame A is formed of intermediate and end sections, the intermediate section being provided with bearings for the said cylinders; and a machine for printing more than one color is made by attach- 7'; ing two or more of said intermediate sections with said end sections.
.In order to insure that the carrier shall move exactly synchronouslylwith the printing couple, I secure a Wheel or wheels F on 8o the shaft which carries one member of the printing couple, preferably the printing or Y type cylinder, and I provide registering devices on said wheel or wheelsand corresponding devices on the carrier, s that when these 8 5 registering devices are engaged the cylinder and iiexible carrier will move together. As shown, I provide every eighth block of the set, whichmake up the flexible carrier, with teeth T and provide teeth F on one-eighth of 9o the periphery of the wheel F, it of course, being obvious that any other Apart of the wheel and carrier may be provided with intermeshing gear if desired. The toothed blocks are preferably those which carry the gripper mechanism.
Each of the cylinders above the iexible carrier is geared with its companion cylinder below the-carrier by means of gears B3 secured on the shafts of said cylinders outside of the frame A, and in the compound printing press, shown in Fig. l, the printing and impression cylinders above the registering band are connected by means of the intermediate gear wheel F2, suitably mounted on the frame A and meshing with gear wheels on the shafts of said cylinder. To support -the carrier at the ends of the frame I provide supports, preferably consisting of polygonal pulleys K J, the two pulleys K at one end of the frame being connected as by a drum I-I and the pulleys .I by a drum G. The drum H is conveniently connected with the adjacent cylinder within the path of travel of the flexible carrierby means of an intermediate gear wheel l suitably j ournaled on the frame A,and which meshes with the gear wheel D2 on the shaft of said drum H.
Power is communicated to the multiple machine by means of the driving belt 3 and a pulley on the shaft of the gear wheel F2, or, if desired, the machine may be driven by a belt 2 on a pulley on the shaft of the gear wheel 1. In the press shown in Fig. 4 the driving wheel 7 is on the shaft of the intermediate gear whcel; it will of course be noted that if the drum I-I is to be connected with a primary cylinder or with different sized impression cylinders within the carrier, that diderent sized intermediate gear wheels will be required. The various sections of the frame are connected by means of sh plates 5 which are secured by bolts or rivets to parts l of adjacent sections, as shown in Fig. 4:. The outer ends of the impression cylinders are provided with shoulders which furnish support for the flexible carrier in its travel. When the cylinder is placed below the path of travel of the carrier the wheels F are removed from the journals of the cylinder and disks B2 are placed upon these journals in their places, which disks form supports for the carrier corresponding to shoulders E4 upon the impression cylinder.
The flexible carrier to which the gripper mechanisms are secured consists of a series of blocks N which are connected together in any suitable way, but in order to prevent the wear and resulting lack of register which results if the blocks are pivoted or hinged together I prefer to connect them in the manner shown, wherein the blocks are abutted end to end and are held together by a suitable liexible band or bands I). These bands may be strips or lengths of thin steel, or indeed, ordinary rope may be employed, but I prefer to use wire cables as shown, one on each side of the series of blocks. To accommodate these cables I prefer to provide the blocks with grooves in their sides, as best shown in Fig. 3, and bars Q may be secured across said teeth R on the supporting pulleys .I K.

In order to positively drive the carrier I prefer to provide the blocks with sockets or recesses 6 which are adapted to be engaged by suitable studs or These supporting pulleys are preferably polygonal, octagonal in the present instance, and each face of the support is equal in length to the length of a block, so .that each side in turn I also provide brackets V secured to the frame of the machine for fsupp'orting the carrier between the various j cylinders and prevent sagging.
`The gripper mechanisms may be of usual and well known form, having the grippers eX- tending across the machine, from side to side,
see Fig. 5, so as to seize the paper or other material on which the printing is done, and,
`as shown in the drawings, they consist, as
usual, of a cross bar W, strikers Y, spring Z y and the grippers A.
In order to hold the blocksfirmly together and to take upfor wear I provide means for Cadjusting the length of the bands which hold lthe blocks together, very convenient means for so doing are shown in Fig. 6 where the ends of the cables P are shown secured in sockets B2 and C2; the sockets B2 are shown stationary and the sockets C2 movablc,the

This duplication of the primary machine may be carried g on indefinitely, thereby forming machines for printing any number of colors desired on j either or both sides of the sheet.
By forming the frame in sections, the same may be made of different lengths by combining different numbers of primary machines according to the number of colors and the kind of work required.
It will be noticed, that, as shown in the drawings, the faces of the wheels .I and K are eight in number, and thewheel on the printing cylinder has one eight-h of its periphery cogged or toothed, whereby but a single block contacts with the wheel of the printing cylinder in a revolution of the same but the faces of the wheels .I and` K may be of a dilferent number and the blocks made to correspond therewith, and the toothed portion of thecylinder wheel made to correspond with the IOO IIO

In a printing press the combination with one or more printing couples consisting of type and impression cylinders, of a flexible carrier consisting of a number of blocks having sockets therein, a band or bands for connecting said blocks together and supporting wheels for the carrier having studs adapted to engage with the socket in the blocks.

In a printing press the combination with one or more printing couples consisting of type andV impression cylinders, of a flexible carrier consisting of a number of blocks having sockets therein, a band or bands for vconnecting said blocks together and polygonal sprocket wheels having studs adapted to engage with the sockets in the blocks.
4. In a printing machine a flexible carrier for conveying sheets to be printed between a printing couple, said carrier consisting of a number of .blocks abutted together, end to end, a band or bands for holding said blocks together, and gripper mechanisms carried by certain of said blocks.
5. In a printing machine a flexible carrier for conveying sheets to be printed between a printing couple, said carrier consistingof a number of blocks abutted together, end to end, and having intermeshing teeth S, a band or bands for holding said blocks together, and gripper mechanisms carried by certain of said blocks.
6. In a printing machine a tlexible carrier for conveying sheets to be printed between a printing couple, said carrier consisting of a number of blocks abutted together end to end, a band or bands for holding said blocks together, means for adjusting the length of said bands and gripper mechanisms carried by certain of said blocks. f

In a printing machine a flexible carrier for conveying sheets to be printed between a printing couple, said carrier consisting of a number of blocks abutted together' end to end, and having intermeshing teeth S, a band or bands for holding said blocks together, means for adjusting the length of said bands, and gripper mechanisms carried by certain of the blocks. y
8. In a printing press the combination with a flexible carrier for conveying sheets between a printing couple and consisting of a number of blocks having sockets thereon a band or band's for connecting said blocks, of supports for the carrier having studs adapted to engage with the sockets in the blocks.
9. Inaprinting press the combination with a flexible carrier for conveying sheets between a printing couple and consisting of a number of blocks having sockets therein and a band or bands for connecting said blocks, of polygonal supports for the carrier having studs adapted to engage with the sockets in the blocks.
10. In a flexible carrier for conveying they sheets to be printed between a printing conple, a number of blocks abutted together, grooves in the sides of said blocks, a band or bands adapted to tit in the grooves and hold the blocks together and gripper mechanisms carried by some of the blocks.

In a flexible carrier for conveying the sheets to be printed between a printing conf ple, a number of blocks abutted together, grooves in the sides of said blocks, a band or bands adapted to fit in the grooves and hold the blocks together, nuts fitting on the end of the bands for adjusting their length and gripper mechanisms carried by some ot' the blocks.
