Description

s. ELLIOTT. SULKY (No Model.)
No. 521,878. Patented June 26, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STERLING ELLIOTT, OF NEWTON, ASSIGNOR TO THE HICKORY WHEEL COMPANY, OF SOUTH FRAMINGHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
SULKY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,878, dated June 26, 1894.
Application filed October 14, 1892. Serial No. 448,801. (No model.)
may be arched if desired, and two forks or yokes connected thereto at the extremities. These forks or yokeseach comprise two substantially parallel arms, joined or connected together at their upper ends, and the ends of the cross-bar are preferably joined or connected to the central part of the crown or head of the forks.
The drawing shows in rear side view a sulky having a supporting frame embodying this invention.
The seat a, and shafts b, are or may be as usual, and are also braced or supported in any usual or suitable way. The supporting frame consists of a cross-bar or piece c,'and two forks 0', 0 connected thereto at the extremities. These forks are made alike or substantially so, each comprising two substantially parallelarms, joined or connected to gether at their upper ends, and at the central part of the crown or head of each fork a nipple 0 projects upwardly, and is screw threaded internally to receive the externally screw threaded extremity of the cross-bar c. The cross-bar c, is bent at or near each end, so that the extremities occupy substantially vertical planes. The wheels cl, are supported on short axles secured to the lower ends of the forks, and said wheels are herein represented as having pneumatic or broad tires. The wheels d, it will be seen, are quite small in diameter, but I do not limit my invention to any particular. size of wheel. These forks while herein shown as screwed into the ends of the cross-bar, may be brazed or otherwise connected thereto. easily constructed and conveniently assembled, and it will be noticed that the forks may be readily detached whenever desired.
One, important advantage of having the forks easily detachable, is that if any repairs are necessary the wheel and its supporting frame may be removed as an entirety and sent to the factory, instead of being obliged to remove the wheel from its fork, which-is a more or less tedious operation, if ball bearings are provided for the Wheel, and furthermore by having forks detachable, the expense of shipment is very materially reduced.
I claim 1. In a sulky, the combination of the shafts, seat and wheels and a supporting frame for said parts consisting of a cross-bar having downwardly projecting ends, and forks detachably connected to the extremities of said cross-bar, substantially as shown and described. n
1 2. In a sulky, the combination of the shafts, seat and wheels, and the supporting frame consisting of the cross-bar having downwardly projecting ends, the extremities of which are screwthreaded, and forks for the wheels'having screw threaded nipples at the crown or head to receive the screw threaded extremities of said cross-bar, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a sulky, the combination of the shafts, seat and wheels, and a supporting frame for said parts comprising two forks for the wheels, and a cross-bar the extremities of which are connected to the crown or head of said forks, substantially as shown and described.
This supporting frame is 4. A sulky having a cross bar with its ends two subscribing witnesses.
STERLING ELLIOTT.
