FERRULE.-

' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,765, dated June 19, 1894. Application filed May 20, 1893. Serial No. 474,866. (No model.)

' To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. GASKILIJ, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ferrules, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of the formation of a ferrule with an inturned seat for the point thereof, whereby the latter is firmly supported on the former, and securely connected therewith, said point having its upper portion hollow, so as to occupy said seat, and said forrule or the body thereof having a base which joins the same and strengthens the lower portion thereof, as will be hereinafter set forth.

Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a ferrule in primary condition embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of the ferrule in condition to receive the point. Fig. 3 represents alongitudinal section of the ferrule with the point connected therewith. Fig. 4 represents a side elevation of a ferrule embodying my invention.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings: A designates a ferrule. having aninturned groove or recess B, and a reduced neck 0, which latter depends from the inner wall of said recess, the latter forming a seat 0' for the upper hollow end of the point D, the neck 0 being within said point. The lower end of the ferrule is pressed inwardly against the point as at E; whereby-the point is securely connected with the ferrule and sustained upwardly in a firm and durable manner on the seat B, it being evident that as the recessB is of the order of 40 a crimp, it provides a strong structure for the seating of the point D, while the neck (J supports the point in lateral direction.

In the formation of the ferrule I form the conical tube with a reduced end a, shoulder 5 crimp above the bottom of said body, as

shown in Fig. 2. The part D is then inserted in position and secured by forcing-in or contracting the lower end of the ferrule, as seen in Fig. 4. The lower portion of the body has the base piece c.joining the side thereof, thus 5 5 vastlystrengthening said portion, and preventing inturning of the lower edge of the reduced portion and consequent loosening of thepoint D.

Having thus described my invention,-what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A ferrule having a body formed of a reduced portion on its lower end, an inturned recess at the place of junction of the wide and reduced portions, a hollow point having its upper end seated in said recess; and a base on the lower end of the reduced portion closing said end.
