SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,534, dated June 19, 1894.

, ton, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and .exact description of the invention, such as will enable others 'skilled in the art to which 1t appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to devices for removably securing carpets in position Without the employment of tacks,l whereby they may be readily raised or detached.

With this and other objects in view the invention vconsists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts `which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a carpet, shown held in p osition by the improved device. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the securing plate with which the carpet engages. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the covering plate or strip.

Similar numerals of ieference are employed to indicate correspondingparts in the several views.

Iteferring to the drawings,.the numeral l designates a securing plate, which has a series of upwardly projecting spurs, 2, along the length thereof, and on the opposite edges at predetermined intervals are slots, 3, the edges containing the said slots 3, being placed against the washboard, and eyes 4, which are secured to the floor adjacent to the washboard, projecting upwardly through the slots, 3, and engaged by hooks pivotally mounted on the top surface of the said securing plate, adjacent to said slots, 3. By this means the securing plates are held in position and the carpet is placed over the said plates and the spurs thereof, the said spurs penetrating the carpet between the threads thereof, without cutting or breaking said threads, it being seen that the said spurs are not pointed or in any wise sharpened. The said spurs are p referably struck up from the metal of the securing plate and also projecting upwardly from opposite ends of each securing plate are lugs, 6, having L-shaped heads, 7. edges thereof, and slots, 10, extending through the body of the same,` adjacent to the opposite ends, through which the lugs 6, pass, and the L-shaped heads of said lugs project sufficiently above the. upper surface of the covering plates orstrips to permit slotted latches, 1l, to be turned against the same and thereby removably lock the said covering plates or strips over the carpet and securing plates, to provide a neat finish. At the corners the securing plates and covering plates will be suitably mitered, and also they will be made in sections, to suit the positions of doors and other openings or alcoves, as may be found desirable and necessary.

The plates, 1, can be made of any suitable width, or the spurs, 2, of any desirable height, proportionately to the strain or tension brought to bear thereon, and in detaching the carpet for the purpose ofr raising the same, the latches, ll, can be quickly disengaged from the heads of the lugs, 6, and the covering plates, 8, quickly removed. In the same manner said covering plates can be as readily applied, as shown in Fig. l. It is preferred that the plates 1, and covering pla-tes or strips, 8, be made of suitable non-corrosive material or metal and the said covering plates can be exteriorly ornamented to make a pleasing design or finish at the edge of the carpet. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a device for holding carpets, the combination of securing plates, having upwardly projecting spurs and slots in their outer edges, eyes extending through said slots, pivoted hooks on the said securing plates, removably engaging said eyes, head lugs extending upwardly from opposite ends of said securing plates, covering 'plates fitted over said securing plates and the carpet engaging the same provided with slots through which said head lugs extend, and latches pivoted on the said securing plates and removably engaging said head lugs, substantially as described.
