To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that LJOHN JOSEPH HARRISON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 83 New Oxford Street, London, in the county of Middlesex, in the Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

I have received patents for this invention in the following countries: England, No. 8,416, dated May 4,1892; France, No. 225,314, dated October 81, 1892; Belgium, No 101,942, dated October 31, 1892; Switzerland, No. 5,969, dated October 31,1892; Germany, No. 69,873, dated November 1, 1892; Victoria, No. 10,172, dated November 30, 1892; Queensland, No. 2,252, dated December 5, 1892; New Zealand, No. 5,960, dated December 21, 1892; India, No. 29,692, dated February 20, 1893; Canada, No. 42,134, dated March 1, 1893, and Austria- Hungary, No. 27,946 and No. 50,482, dated October 12, 1893. v

This invention relates more particularly to the construction of match or other boxes or stands, intended also for exhibiting advertisements or photographs, the operating mechanism being such that the opening of the lid of the receptacle Will cause a revolution or partial revolution of a cylindrical or truncated cone-shaped framework.

The inventionis hereinafter described with reference to a match box employed as an advertising medium, from which the application of the invention for other uses willbe obvious.

The construction is described with the aid" of the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a match box with the bottom of the stand removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan through y 2; Fig. 3 a sectional elevation broken away in one part so as to show the matches; Fig. 4 a plan of the apparatus, a portion being broken away and Fig. 5 a sectional elevation with parts removed.

Referring to the drawings :A, is a receptacle containing matches or other like articles around which the truncated cone or cylinder '5 rotates with a step by step or intermittent partial rotation each time the lid of the receptacle is raised. This lid, B, is shown in Figs.

3and 5 as closed, and in dotted lines as open with the arm 0 attached to the under side of the lid and having the limiting pin 0. Pivoted to the slotted end of the arm by the bolt 01 is the pawl D. This pawl D has a squared shoulder which abuts against the shoulder d on the arm 0 to hold it in rigid position therewith, only allowing it to swing in one direction and pass the stops H.

E is a second arm or pawl pivoted to the arm 0 at e having a projection at its free end so that it will lie against the arm 0 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and prevent it from swinging only in a direction away from the arm 0 by coming in contact with said arm when in the position shown in Fig. 3. The bell-crank lever pivoted at f to the receptacle A carries a loose link G pivoted at g and sliding in a suitable guideway. The stops or teethH are fixed to the base plate I which carries a skeleton truncated frame 2'; this being pivoted on the bolt J which is screwed-to the base of the match' receptacle A. Round this bolt, the base plate I, with its frame 2', is capable of revolving being held in place on the base S by a split pin 3' and washer, covered from sight by a plate of tin or other metal 7' The mode of action on this part of the apparatus is as follows:The lid B being raised to its limit the arm 0 with the pawl D is brought back until the pawl D slides over the next stop H in the path of its throw. At the same time, the arm E slides over the nose of lever F and. when the lid is closed, the arm 0 with pawl D bears against the stop H and pushes or advances with it the plate I and easing i one step or as shown through one eighth of an arc of a circle. In the meantime, the piece E, sliding back over the short arm and lever F, depresses the frame and thus raises the link G from the front of the stop H before the pawl D acts and. allows it to fall on the other side and in front of the next stop, and prevents the frame from moving more thanone step. A loose ratchet Kis also pivoted to the box A, to engage the stops and pre vent a backward movement of the frame as shown in Fig. 2. Passing through a hole in the cover is a button L supported on link Z.

This link is attached to a bell-crank lever Z, shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the longer arm of this lever carrying a clapper Z capable of coming in contact with the gong Z whenever the push button is pressed down.

M is a small box with a cigar cutter fixed on the lid B, the cigar end being inserted through the hole m to be cut by a knife '1 fixed to the lid W of the box, this lid being hinged at u and supported by a spring S.

Other forms of cigar cutter can be substituted for the above or a pincushion or other article.

On the skeleton frame 2' are cut the small slots 91, both above and below, these being arranged to fix advertisements, photographs or even continuous bands of matter to the cone i; so that the same can be read as they come opposite the spaces 19 in the outer cone. This outer cone P is fixed to abase plate Q, through which the rod J passes being free to rotate on the rod or not as desired; R, are roughened places for striking matches; and S is the stand upon which the whole apparatus is supported.

In use the inner box will be filled with matches, the inner cone z' will be covered with advertisements, each of the size of the opening 19 in the outer frame, P. Every time the lid of the match box is opened, these advertisement-s will be moved around one position so that four advertisements, in this instance, will be seen through the four openings at a time: and after the match box lid has been again raised, four other advertisements will be seen instead. The whole upper box being on a pivot, any person wishing to get at the lid of the box or the bell knob can spin it around till it arrives at a convenient position. The bell knob is used for the calling of a waiter or otherwise.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination in an advertising device and devices for the use of smokers of a base, a recessed frame or cone mounted on said base, a second frame revolving within said outer frame, a covered receptacle surrounded by said inner frame and a vertical axis extending through the base and frames and secured to the receptacle, substantially as described.

2. The combination in an advertising or exhibiting device, of a base, a drum mounted on said base, a series of stops on said drum corresponding in number and position to the advertisements or exhibits, a receptacle surrounded by said drum, a pivoted lid on the receptacle, and an arm carrying a pivoted pawl on the lid of the receptacle to engage thestops, substantially as described.
