CHARLES VAN DE WATER, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO JAMES H. PEACOCK, OF SAME PLACE.
PIPE OR NUT WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,130, dated June 5,1894.
Application filed March 2t, 1894:. Serial No. 5041 (N0 model-l To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES VAN DE WA- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe or Nut Wrenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches, and especially to the class of sliding jaws, and the aim is to produce a device of this nature which, while a very firm grip is secured when using the jaws for a pipe wrench, the same may be held in a locked position for useasa nut wrench.
To these ends and to such others as may hereinafter appear, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and adaptation of the parts as will be clearly defined in the appended claim, and then illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon, form apart of this specification, similar letters of reference indicating like parts in both views, in which Figure 1, is a longitudinal section of the wrench; used as a pipe wrench;'Fig. 2,a perspective view, showing the wrench used as a nut-wrench.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A, represents one jaw of the wrench having a steel head with notches a, and having a series of notches B, on the rear side of the handle 0. v
D is a movable jaw having the notches c and to the projecting portion 0' is pivoted between the walls of the jaw a lever E which has a notch engaging lug d which is adapted to engage with the notches B, to hold the jaws in a locked relation, and also acting as a ful-' crum when the jaws are used for gripping a pipe. The jaw D has the lever E pivoted a sufficient distance from the handle 0, so as to allow of a slight draw on the jaw when the same is working on a pipe. By this construction it will be seen that the points close faster than the handles when the handles are'drawn together. By this movement the teeth of the movable jaw move slightly backward thus firmly gripping the pipe. A pin G secured to the lever E, and working in the slot I-l, guides the movable jaw D. J is a pin to limit the movement of jaw D on the handle 0.
The advantages derived from my improved construction of pipe and nut wrench will readily be seen. When it is desired to use the wrench as a nut wrench, the lug on the lever engages the notches B, thus holding the jaws in substantially a parallel relation. By the fulcrumed movement a very firm grip 18 secured on a pipe.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
A sliding jaw pipe and nut wrench comprising in combination a j aw having a notched handle, a movable jaw having pivoted between the walls of the projecting portion 0' a lever provided with a lug, a pin secured to said lever and working in a slot in said movable jaw, the said lug adapted to act as a fulcrum when the device is used as a pipe wrench, and as a means for holding the jaws in a parallel relation, when the device is used as a nut wrench, all substantially as shown and described;
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
