Be it known that 1', WILLIAM FLEMING, of Newberry, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in 'lriggers for Double-Barreled Guns, of which the following is a specification. l he object of my invention is to dispense with the necessity of having more than one trigger for double barreled guns, and to have this one trigger so constructs and adjusted as to enable it to serve the purpose of two, permitting either barrelof the gun to be fired together, or either-one in sequence after the other; and to this end it consists in the peculiar construction of the trigger and its arrangement in relation to the two sears that release the tumblers of the hammers, which I will now proceed to more fully describe with reference to the drawings, in which.-
Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a gun stock partly broken away in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken through line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 isa plan view of the inside faceof the triggerplate and trigger, shown in relation to the two sears which operate upon the tumblers of their respective hammers.
In the drawings A A are the right angular inwardly projecting arms of the two sears which, for the most parts, are of the ordinary construction. These sear arms project inwardly toward each other, and ordinarily lie just above the shoulders of their respective triggers, so that one trigger will act upon one of the sear arms, and the other trigger upon the other sear arm, giving nected and independent trigger action for each hammer.
In my invention I use but a single trigger B which has the usual hook shaped finger hold below, while its body portion is pivoted at its upper end at a to the fulcrum lug b of the metal trigger plate C which is screwed as usual to the lower side of the grip of the gun in middle longitudinal position. The shoulder B of the trigger I construct as a laterally movable block adapted to be adjusted into range of engagement of either sear arm to the exclusion of the other, and thick enough to engage the ends of both sear arms at once a wholly disco'n when the'trigger shoulder'is in its normal or middle position. For the lateral adjustment of the trigger shoulder it has a vertical pin 0 so as to come within range of exclusive en-- gagement with one or the other sear arm. For rigidly connecting the pin 0 to the trigger shoulder, a simple and practical method is to drill vertically ,through the shoulder, insort the .pin 0, and then drill horizontally through the shoulder a hole that pierces theside of the pin 0, and then insert a locking pin 0 which acts as a key, and is then'riveted to hold it in place. i After the trigger shoulder is raised by the trigger against the sear. arm to fire the gun,

If, however, both hammers are cooked, and it is not desired to fire both simultaneously, but one .after the other, the trigger shoulder is adjusted to one side by the thumb piece. The first pull on the trigger acts then exclusively on one sear arm, and as the trigget shoulder in this action, goes back to the middle position (where it can act on both sear arms) the next pull in immediate suczo cession causes the other'hammer to descend. Either of the two barrels may 'thus be fired first according to which side the trigger shoulder is adjusted. f My invention accomplishes, in a simple, cheap, and practical way; the same results thatare attained ordinarily with two triggers, but in dispensing with one trigger gives much more finger room in the trigger guard.
The invention is equally well applicable to 0 guns having concealed hammers (hammcrless guns) and to double barreled rifles, or a combined shot gun and ride, where it is desirable to have space enough in the trigger guard to use an extra hair or set-trigger.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a double barreled fire arm, the combination with the two scars, of a single trig- 4o ger having a shoulder adj ustable into operative relation with either or both sears substantially as shown and described.
2. In a double barreled fire arm, the com bination with the two sears, of a singletrigger having an adjustable shoulder made thick enough to operate upon both sears at once,
and means for adjusting it into operative position with one sear to the exclusion of the 3. In a double barreled fire arm, the combination with the two sears of a single trigger, an adjustable shoulder carried by said trigger, means for adjusting it laterally, a spring for throwing it to its middle position, and locking devices for holding it to either side of its middle position substantially as and for the purposedescribed.
