To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. FINLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, 1n the county of Erie and State of New York, have lnvented certain new and useful Im= provements in Windlasses for Grain-Shovels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent1on, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany lng drawlngs, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to windlasses which are used in connection with'grain-shovels for moving the grain in the hold of a vessel up to the foot of the elevator leg; These windlasses are mounted in frames located in the elevator building and it is necessary to shift their operative position to meet varying conditions in the location of the hatches of the vessel being unloaded.
The object of my invention therefore is to provide the frame now employed in carrying the Windlass and its operative shaft with improvedmeans by which it is adjusted in a horizontal direction for the purpose desired and to that end it consists in the combination with the outer-framecarrying the operative shaft of an auxiliary inner frame adjustably seated within the outer frame and carrying the Windlass, and improved means for moving the auxiliary inner frame and operative shaft horizontally within the outer frame as will be substantially hereinafter described.
I will now proceed to minutely describe the mannerin which I have carried out my invention and then claim what. I believe to be novel.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved construction as applied to a Windlass used in operating the grain shovel. Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are enlarged detached details of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is an enlarged side elevation of Fig. 1, and Fig. 8 is an enlarged side elevation of the spools and operative shaft of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings it will be seen that I have shown my invention as applied to that class of windlasses which are located in the elevator building and employed in operatingwhat is known as the steam shovel which moves the grain to the foot of the ele- .vator leg to be carried up inlits buckets.
i In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the outer frame is numbered 32 which carries the operative shaft 33 and is rigidly secured in its surrounding frame Work (not shown).
. 36 is the auxiliary inner frame movable horizontally within the outer frame 32 by means of the screw threaded rod 34 rem ovably secured to the auxiliary frame 36 and operated in a screw-threaded socket or bearing in the outer frame 32.
' The Windlass to which my invention is ap plied consists of the two'pulleys 37, 37 keyed to the shaft 33. Above and below the shaft 33 and mounted in the frame 36 are the short shafts 38, 38, upon which are mounted at each end the pulleys 39, 39, just above the pulleys 37, 3-7, and the pulleys 40, 40, justbelow the pulleys 37, 37. Upon these shafts 38, 38, are keyed the upp'er'spools 41, 41, and the lower spools 42, 42. The pulleys 39 and 40 are moved into frictional contact with the pulleys 37 by means of the eccentric sleeves 43 (see Figs. 6 and 8) which raise or lower the shafts 38, 38, through the medium of the lovers 44 and cords 45 passing over pulleys 46 down into the hold of the vessel. By this means the spools 41 and 42 are revolved as desired and cords 47 wound upon the same or'unwound for the purpose of operating scoops for moving the grain to the foot of the elevator leg. As the pulleys 37, 37, are keyed to the shaft 33 this shaft moves with the auxiliary frame 36 when its position is changed horizontally in the outer frame 32. This is permitted by loosening the outer pulleys 47 and 48, when the shaft 33 is free to slide in either direction in its bearings 49 in the outer frame. The screw-threaded rod 34 by which the auxiliary inner frame 36 is moved to adjust the position of the Windlass with relation to the hatch of the vessel, has its outer end provided with a hand Wheel 50 for turning the same and its inner end 51 is of smaller diameter and has the end annular flange 52 (see Fig. 2) which rests loosely in the socket 53 with the vertical slot 54 open at the top for the insertion and removal of the annular flange 52.
Upon the right side of the outer frame 32 I have arranged the bearing for the screwthreaded rod 34 consisting of the inner portion 55 bolted to the frame 32 and having the semi-circular screw-threaded groove 56 (see Fig. 4) and the outer portion 57, having the semi-circular screw-th readed groove 58 hinged at its top to the portion 55, and having its lower end provided with the handle 59 and orifice 60 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4) for the reception of a pin 61 which looks it in position over the screw-threaded rod 34. When the rod 34; is in operative position as shown, by turning the hand-wheel 50, the rod is turned in its screw-threaded socket, thereby causing it to move in the direction of its length and with it the auxiliary inner frame 36 which can thus be adjusted horizontally as desired to fix the relative position of the Windlass carried thereby.
