SAFETY DEVICE FOR ELEVATORS.
.SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520.844, dated J une 5,1894=.

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. Dow,a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, n the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Elevators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, andeXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany.- ing drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. r i p My invention is a safety device for elevators Whereby the starting of the elevator while the door is open is prevented.
The invention consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, Figu'e 1 is a plan view of my improved device showing it arranged to permit the passage of the elevator and Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the device arranged to prevent the passage of the elevator.
In carrying out my invention, I secure to the side or bottom of the elevator car or cage the fixed jaw A and the guides B which may be formed integral or separate from each other, as preferred, and consist of flat metallic plates having longitudinal grooves in their inner edges asshown. The sliding jaw C is mounted in the guides and slides along the same to and away from the fixed jaw so as to release the Operating lever or cable or clamp the same against the fixed jaw. The outer end of the sliding jaw is engaged and operated by a pinion D which is preferably constructed in the form of a segmental gear meshing with a rack bar E on the side of the sliding jaw, the pinion being mounted on one of the guides which is partlycut away to accommodate the same. The pinion is provided with a lever arm F which projects beyond the elevator car into the path of the door which leads into the elevator well. The outer end of this lever arm is adapted to be struck and operated by the door, Gr, and is provided with a small roller H to reduce the friction and wear on the door. The lever arm is held normally outward by a spring I, as shown, and astop J is arrangedin the held again st movement and consequently the elevator cannot be startedwhile the door is opened. As soon as the door is closed, the
spring returns the lever arm and sliding jaw to their initial positions and the elevator can then be started.
My device is entirely automatic in its operation and is obviously simple and efticient.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A safety device for elevators consisting of a clamp adapted to grasp the Operating cable or lever and comprising a fixed jaw, guideways extending from said fixed jaw, a sliding jaw mounted in the guideways, a pinion engaging the sliding j aw to force the same against the operatin g cable orlever, and means for rotating said pinion.
2 The combination of the elevator well door the fixed jaw, the sliding jaw, a pinion engaging the same and having a lever arm projecting into the path of the said elevator well door, and a spring acting on said lever arm in opposition to the said door.
3. The combination of the elevator well door, the fixed jaw, guide-ways extending from said jaw, a sliding jaw mounted in said guideways and having a rack bar formed on one side, a pinion engaging said rack bar and having a lever arm projecting into the path of the elevator well door, a spring acting on said lever arm in opposition to the said door, and a stop arranged in rear of the lever arm to limit its movement.
