UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. CRABB, OF SAND LAKE, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO FRED S. ORABB AND JACOB S. LOCKERBY, OF SAME PLACE.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 520,561, dated May 29, 1894. Application filed September 25, 1893. Serial No. 486,363. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. CEABB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sand Lake, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description-of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in churns, and its object is to provide the same with certain new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a vertical section of a device embodying my invention, on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 a plan view of the same with parts broken away to show the internal construction; Fig.3 a detail of the pivot bearing of the yoke; and Fig. 4 a detail showing the construction of the yoke.
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A represents the usual rectangular box, or vessel, having an upper removable portion A secured by a bar B, which portion when removed permits access to the interior of the said vessel. Upon a suitable frame work L and at opposite sides of the same are knife edge supports M, upon which rests a yoke consisting of a transverse middle part H, which extends beneath the middle of the box A, and two vertical portions H embracing the sides of said box and extending upward to about `midway of said sides, from whence they extend outward at H, having oppositely inclined under sides H to rest upon the knife edges M. An armIdepends from the middle of said voke, to which is attached a vertically adjustable Weight J, whereby the center of gravity ofthe device is adjusted to conform to different quantities of cream therein contained. Cleats N and N are attached to the box A at each side of said yoke, which retain said box and yoke in proper relative position, and permit of freely lifting the box out of the yoke as occasion requires; a lever K is also attached to said yoke, whereby the device is operated.
bars F', form a rack, whichis divided at the middle, and detachably secured in the bottom of the box A, by means of a button G and spurs G. By disengaging said button the inner end of each portion of said rack may be raised and the sections removed from the box for cleaning.
As the box A oscillates in a vertical plane the cream iiows alternately toward each end of the same, and is broken up and churned by flowing over the bars F', and also passes under and lifts the deflector E, as it flows in one direction and passes over and depresses said dellector as it passes in the opposite direction, this deflector further agitates the cream and exposes it to the air. Said deflector also imparts a rolling motion to the butter after separation takes place, whereby it is in a short time gathered into a single large roll.
It will be observed that the parts of this device are readily detachable and removable from each other for cleaning and also of simple and easy construction.
1. In a churn, in combination With'a box pivoted to vibrate on a horizontal axis, a deiiector plate arranged in an inclined position within said box, and pivoted near its upper end to said box, and having its lower end detached and freely movable vertically, whereby the cream or products thereof passalternately below and above said plate, substantially as described.
2.' In a churn, in combination With a box, substantially as described, and having an openingat the top,and having vertical grooves in the sides of the same,a removable bar pivotally mounted in said grooves, and a defiector plate attached at the upper end to said bar,
IOO
and freely movable in a vertical plane at the secured in the bottom of said box, substanro lower end, substantially as described. tially as described.
3. In a churn, in combination with a box In testimony whereof I affix my signature in substantially as described, to contain the presence of two witnesses. 5 cream and pivoted to vibrate on a horizontal axis, a rack divided near the middle, spurs in GEORGE W' CRABB' the ends'of said rack engaging the ends of Witnesses: said box, and a buttonengaging the middle J. S. LOCKERBY,
of said rack, whereby said rack is detaehably LUTHER V. MOULTON.
