Be it known that I, ALLAN P. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Tip Cutters, of

which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to cigar cutters of the kind used in cigar stores, saloons, and the like for cutting off the ends of cigars.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple apparatus, compact in form and very eective in operation.

The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described and referred to in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings which illustrate my invention Figure l is a top plan view of my improved cigar tip cutter. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the knife. Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing in detail the tripping mechanism.

In the drawings A represents the casing as a whole. It is provided with the hinged bottom @through which access can be had to wind the operating mechanism.l This bottom is closed by means of a pivoted catch b which engages a slot formed in the casing.

The plate B forms the covering of the casing or box A and is providedwith an opening C into the end of which the cigar may be inserted. The inner side of the plate B has formed upon it lugs or ears d having screw threaded holes registering with holes in the sides of the box or casing through which screws may be inserted to hold the cover, and parts connected therewith, securely in place. This cover or plate B has at each .corner a post D preferably cast therewith, each of these posts having in its inner end holes to which are secured by screws e' the four corners of an inner plate or frame E, between which and the plate or cover B, are supported the operating parts of the apparatus. Journaled in the two walls B and E is the shaftF upon which is mounted a coiled springf and 5o a rigid gear wheel G integral with the drum H within which the spring f is placed. When therefore the spring is Wound up, the drum andgear, when said spring is released, will be rotated by said spring, as in the ordinary clock work mechanism. This shaftF beyond its bearing, is squared and adapted to receive a key for Winding up the spring by the revolution of said shaft. There is provided the'usual pawl and ratchet I in connection with the winding mechanism. Arranged above the shaft Fis secured a shaft h parallel thereto and also journaled in bearings in .the frame B and E. Upon said shaft is a gear meshing with the gear wheel G, so that when the latter is spring actuated the former will rotate. Upon the outer end of this shaft h is a knife k, and by considerable experimenting I have discovered that the shape herein shown is preferable to any heretofore usedl The knife is preferably an S in. shape with wide central portion Z, and cutting portions m, n, extending from the inner extremity/of the hub to almost the point where the curvature for the end of the S begins. Each end of the knife has a shoulder o.

Formed upon the frame E is a hollow post or tube L and in this is adapted to slide a headed stud or follower M normally pressed outwardly from said tube by the spring p. The head N of this stud is made so that when extended it just closes the opening in the cover B through which the cigar tip is inserted and the stud or follower M will be forced in by the pressure of the cigar whenv the tip is inserted in the said opening.

Pivoted to a stud in the frame E is a pawl q having a beveled forward end this pawl being normally-pressed downward by a spring r to engage with the shoulders 0 on the knife lo, acting as a stop to prevent its rotation.

The follower M has secured to it a cam s engaging with the beveled portion of the pawl q so that when the stud M is forced in, the beveled end of 'the pawl q, will ride upon the inclined cam s raising it from its engagement with the shoulder o and permitting the knife to rotate until the pressure is taken off the stud M, when it will return to its normal position allowing the pawl q to again engage with one of the shoulders 0.

The operation will be thoroughly'understood from theforegoing description. The end of the cigar being placed within the opening in the cover B and being pressed upon the tip,

forces in the spring follower M the cam s on whichv raises the pawl q from engagement with the shoulder o and allows the spring in the barrel, or drum to rotate the gears and linife to cut off the tip. The obstruction belng removed the follower` returns to its normal position allowing the pawl q to fall and catch one of the shoulders o thus preventing further rotation of the knife k.

I am aware that cigar cutters have been heretofore constructed in which the pressure of a cigar trips a mechanism which causes a knife to cut oif the end of the cigar and I do not claim such broadly as my invention, which is limited to the details of construction for producing the desired results.

What I claim, and desire to secure Letters Patent for, is

In a cigar cutter the combination of a shaft having a gear and a spring mounted thereon, with a shaft provided with a pinion adapted to mesh with said gear, plates E and B by which the operating parts are supported, the former having an opening for the cigar tip, a hollow post/secured to the latter, a spring follower supported thereon and having a cam surface, a cutting knife on the second shaft having stops, and a pawl pivoted to the frame E and having a beveled forward end engaging the stops on the knife and adapted to be engaged by the cam surface on the plunger; substantially as described.
