To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS G. GUTTERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Warren and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Grain-Veighers and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for weighing grain, &c., and more particularly to that class known as automatic grain weighers or measures, and it has forits object the provision of a simple, compact and effective apparatus, by means of which grain of every character can be weighed and handled, and accurately measured before shipping. And it consists essentially in a drum or cylinder divided into compartments and provided with mechanism whereby the operation of the device is accomplished accurately and without interruption.
The invention further consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the several parts of the device, as hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawing and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
The figure represents a view in elevation of the device and the attached mechanism, partly broken away, showing the valves and their operating mechanism, the valves and rods in full lines showing the right hand compartment closed and the left hand compartment in readiness for the reception of the grain to be weighed and measured, and the dotted lines showing the right hand compartment open and ready for the grain.
A represents a suitable support or a part of the elevator frame for carrying the grain to an elevated position from which it is run or dumped into the weighing drum or cylinder B, through a suitable opening in the top thereof, as shown in the drawing.
B represents a drum orcylinder having an opening at both top and bottom, the opening at the top being for the admission of the grain to the interior of the drum or cylinder, while that at the bottom is for its egress, as is apparent. Vertically through the centerv of this drum or cylinder is a partition a, terminating at each end within the cylinder or drum within the openings at top and bottom, as shown, and divides the drum or cylinder into two receptacles, each of which is provided with an opening at its top adjacent to one another, and just beneath the opening in the top of the drum or cylinder, so that grain entering this opening can be thrown into first one compartment and then the other, as hereinafter described.
cl is a valve hinged or pivoted in the top of said drum or cylinder and serves to close the openings in the top of the compartments in the drum or cylinder B, alternately, as is evident.
f is a crank arm secured to the valve d, rigidly, and is attached at its free end to a rod 2', which is secured at its opposite end to the free ends of a V-shaped valve is in the egress opening of the drum or cylinder, as shown. This V-shaped valve is secured between the openings in the bottom of the compartments in the drum or cylinder, as at b,in such a manner that when the lower end of one compartment is opened the lower end of the other will be closed, as is apparent. It
will thus be seen that when the valve 70 falls or is thrown to the position 921/, it will pull down the rod 1' and throw the valve (Z over into the position shown at d, and at the same time the opposite leg of the V-shaped valve will be thrown upward from the position m to the position m, as shown.
D are vertical supports secured to the side of the drum or cylinder and are secured at their upper ends to the scale beam E, which is fulcrumed at e, as shown.
F is a sliding poise on the forward end of the scale arm E.
G is a registersecured to the support A and connected with the scale beam E by the trigger g, and registers every descent of the drum or cylinder, as is apparent.
H is a suitable rod connecting the elevator frame A, or other support with the drum or cylinder 13, to prevent it swinging during the weighing of the grain.
I, I, are latches and are securely pivoted holding them vlocked until released by the releasing mechanism.
0, ',are vertical rods secured at their lower ends to the looks or latches l, I, and extend up and beyond the top of the cylinder B, and pass up and through the small stationary brackets n, n, and have secured upon their upper ends the adjustable nuts 19, p, for the purpose of limiting the downward movement of the latches I, 1', and throwing them from the pins m m in the free ends of theV-shaped valve 70, so as to permit the weight of the grain in the compartment to force the valve 7c from its position and flow out into a hopper 0 located just beneath this egress opening, as shown.
The operation of this device is as follows: The device having been set to weigh or measure a certain number of pounds of grain. The valve cl is set to run the grain to be measured into one of the compartments in the drum or cylinder, which will cause the V- 0 shaped valve 715 to close the exit opening in the bottom of the compartment into which it is desired to run the grain. The weight of the grain running into the cylinder causes it to descend. hen the desired quantity is in 5 the compartment the rods 0, 0, will have reached the limit of their downward movement, and will remove the latches from the the pins m m on the if-shaped valve 7;, and the weight of the grain in the compartment 4.0 will force the valve 70 from over the opening and allow the grain to escape into the hopper O beneath. When one wing of the r -shaped valve is is forced from its seat over the opening in one compartment it is thrown over the 5 opening in the other compartment and closes it, which movement of the Vwhaped valve 7c through the rod t' and the crank armf operates the valve (if so as to open the opening in the top of the compartment that has just been closed at its bottom by the V-shaped valve. As the weight is removed from the drum or cylinder the latches drop over the pins on and lock the if-shaped valve in position ready to measure the next lot of grain.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a grain weigher of the character described the combination of the drum or cylinder mounted on a vertical support, compartments therein, openings in the top and bottom of each compartment, a valve mounted in the top of said drum or cylinder adapted to close alterately the openings in the top of said compartments, V-shaped valve pivoted in the bottom of said drum for opening and closing alternately the openings in the bottom of said compartments, and the rod 71 and the crankf connecting the valves in the top and bottom of the drum; with the latches I, I pivoted on the lower end of the vertical support, vertical rods 0, 0 having their lower ends attached to the free ends of the latches l, l, and their upper ends passing through brackets secured to a suitable support, brackets through which said rods pass, and nuts on the upper ends of said rods adapted to be adj usted to cause the release of thelatches when a sufficient weight of grain has been measured in a compartment, as set forth.
2. In a grain weigher of the character described the combination of the drum or cylinder mounted on a vertical support, compartments therein, openings in the top and bottom of each compartment,a valve mounted in the top of said drum or cylinder adapted to close alternately the openings in the top of said compartments, t -shaped valve pivoted in the bottom of said drum for opening and closing alternately the openings in the bottom of each compartment, and pins or lugs on the free ends of said valve, and the rods t'and crankf connecting the valves in the top and bottom of said drum or cylinder, with the latches l, I, pivoted on the lower end of the vertical support, lugs or notches in the free ends of said latches adapted to engage the pins or lugs on the free ends of the valve to lock the said valve when closed, vertical rods 0, 0, having their lower ends attached to the free ends of the latches I, I, and their upper ends passing through brackets secured to a suitable support, brackets through which said rods pass, and nuts on the upper ends'of said rods adapted to press upon the said brackets and cause the release of tho latches from engagement with the lugs or pins on the free ends of the valve in the bottom of the compartments, as and for thepurpose set forth.
3. In a grain weigher the combination of a drum or cylinder mounted on a vertical sup port and having compartments therein, a V- shaped valve in the bottom of said drum, and pins or stops on m in the outer ends of said valve with the latches I, l, pivoted on the lower end of the vertical support, notches in the free ends of said latches, vertical rods 0, 0', having their lower ends attached to the free ends of the latches l, l, and their upper ends passing through brackets secured to a suitable support, and nuts on the upper ends of said rods adapted to be adjusted to cause a release of the latches when a sufficient weight of grain has been measured into a compartment, as set for h.
