Description

(No Model.)
E. C. HOLLAND. ENE GAP EOE CYLINDER SEWING MACHINES.
Patented May 15, 1894.
PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS CALVIN HOLLAND, OF AUSTIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE UNION SPECIAL SEWING MACHINE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
END-CAP FOR CYLINDER SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming Dart 0f Letters Patent NO. 519,909, dated IVIay 15, 1894.
Application tiled July 11,1893. Serial No. 480,148. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIAS CALVIN HOLLAND, a'citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county ot' Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Caps for Cylinder Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Myinvention relates to an improvementin sewing machines and particularly to those having a cylindrical bed plate, and my object is to provide a new form of end cap for use on such machines.
The invention consists in the various details of construction of the parts all as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation partly in section, showing my invention as applied in full lines for closing the cylinder and in dotted lines as swung back to enable the operator to gain access to the interior of the cylinder.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view, and Fig. 3 is an end view of my invention.
In the drawings A represents the cylinder or bed plate of the sewing machine to which my invention is to be applied, and B` represents the end cap for closing the same. The cap Bis made approximately bell-shaped, and the apex is cut off as shown. The under side of the cap is' iiattened as shown at a and is provided with a downwardly projecting lug b.
Secured to the end of the casing by means of screws passing through holes cis a segment C, the outer peripheryof which preferably follows the curve of the rim dof thecap B. This segment C has outwardly projecting lugs e which are suiiciently separated to permit the insertion of the lug b between them, saidlug being pivoted to them by means of the pin f passing through all three.
A curved plate spring D is secured by means of the screw g to the flattened face of the cap B, and is curved outwardly at its inner end cap in its opened or closed so as to bear on the lugs e, thereby holding to accommodate the ends of the various shafts located within the cylinder.
As heretofore constructed, the end cap has been extended out to a point, and with such a construction certain sizes of shoes would not fit upon the cylinder, hence the reason for shaping my end cap as shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a sewing machine having a cylindrical ,casing forming the bed plate, a device for closing the end of said casing comprising atapering end cap having a rim fitting against the end of the bed plate of the machine, said cap having a iattened under side, a lug secured thereto, a rigid segment secured to the casing and to which the lug is pivoted, and a spring for holding the position; substantially as described.
2. In combination with a sewing machine having a cylindrical casing forming the bed plate, a device for closing the end of said casing comprising a tapering end cap having a rim iitting against the end of the bed plateof the machine, said cap having a attened under side and provided with a lug b, a segment C secured to the casing, and having lugs e, a pivot pin passing through the lugs b and e, anda spring D secured to the cap B and having a downwardly curved 'end bearing on the lugs e, said cap having an opening at its outer end; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Iaftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELIAS CALVIN .I-IOLLAND.
