l M PROV-EM ENT lN WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5 l,9.6l, dated J annary 9, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
. Wrench with the griping-jaw'att-ached 'there- Fig. 2' is a perspective view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view, and Fig. 4is a front view, of the said gripingg'aw, similar letters referring to like parts in all the drawings.
The nature of my invention consists in applying to any ofthe common kinds of wrenches which are rendered adjustable by, a screw or other means an auxiliary jaw of steel, having a serrated face inclined obliquely to the line of thejaws of the wrench, so that cylindrical bodies, as gas-pipe, bolts, &c., may be firmly grasped and held, and any screw-wrench may be thereby converted into a pipe-wrench by the simple application of the auxiliary jaw.
The construction of my invention is as follows: A piece of steel, A, of nearly the same length and width as the fixed jaw of the screwwrench to which it is to be applied, has a slot,
M, cut therein of suitable dimensionsto receive the bar 0 of the wrench and allow the lugs or sides L L to project far enough to allow the tapering pin B to be inserted in suitable holes in. said lugs or side pieces, thereby fastening the auxiliary jaw upon the bar of the wrench. 'Theportion of the steel piece A above the slot M is made of the shape of half a wedge, and the inclined side thereof is serrated for the purpose of griping the surfaces placed again'stit. The slot is made sufficiently long to allow the auxiliary jaw to move up and down a short distance upon the bar C when the pin B is in place, which movement is necessary for the efi'icient working of the attachment.
Some of the advantages of my invention I conceive to be, first, that it supplies the need of a wrench for grasping and holding cylindrical bodies by a very small and cheap attachment; second, that while it is not claimed that it will supersede the common forms of pi 'ie-rwrenches for extensive jobs in gas-pi pin g, it nevertheless furnishes a ready means of co'nvertingthe screw-wrenches in common use into serviceable pipe-wrenches.
. I disclaim as my invention the simple use of an auxiliary jaw or griper, as the same seems to make a part of the claim of Joseph Hyde in Letters Patent N 0. 12,510, bearin g date March 13, 1855; and I also expressly disclaim as my invention the construction of the jaw in such manner as to slide to and from the bar of the wrench, or any other matter or thing covered by the Letters Patent No. 23,587,, issued to George B. Phillips, bearing date"
