Description
E. OALDERVVOOD, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
'wiuoow-sAsl-i FASTENER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5ll,9l8, dated January 9, 1866 anteaated January 3, 1866. l
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. CALDERWOOD, ot' Portland, in the county ot` Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented new-and useful Improvements in Window-Sash Fasteners; and I do hereby .declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitication.
The present invention consists in producing suteient friction between the sash and window frames that as the sash-frames'are raised or lowered thereon they can be retained at any desired height by means ot' a dat metallic sp1-ing inserted iu each side of thersashIframesV in conta-ct with the window-frame, and in the longest direction thereof, of nearly the same length as sashframe, and lheld at each end but free in the center, against which springs pressure to any desired degree is brought `to bear, causing them to bind against the sides of the window-frame, by means of rubber springs and thumb-'screws inserted in the proper posit-ions ot' the sash-frames.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvements are represented, Figure Ibeing a view of the inner side of the window and sash frames when the latter are secured within the former; Fig. 2, a centralvertical section in plane of line x fr, Fig. l; Fig. V3, a detail view of sash-frame.
a, a in the drawings represent a-w1ndow frame made in any of the ordinary modes and of `any suitable material b b its sill, and c c its upright pieces, and d d its top piece.
Within and between the inner facesof the window-frame the upper and lower sashframes, f and g, one above and back ot' the other, are inserted, as ordinarily, and retained in their proper positions by the narrow wooden strips h It generally employed therefor, which strips are fastened to and ,upon the windowi'ranies by thumb-screws l l, &e., so as to allow the sash -t'rames to be readily removed for cleaning` or resetting' the glass thereof if any should be broken.
To holdthe sash-frames tightly together when the windows are closed, and to prevent them from being opened from the outside, l placeeupor each ofthe two frames, and at their edge` ,n contact with each other, a projecting standard, m lm., through which a thnm bscrew', n, is passed, by the turning or" which to the right or let'tit either holds the two frames together or. releases them from each other, according as may be desired.
In lieu of using the standardsior a hearing for the thumb-screw, it inay-bepassed directly and in lieu of only through the sashframes, one thumb-screw two -or more may be' used, it' desired. l
In the side o of sash-frame, (see Fig. 1,) and in a groove, p, thereof', is aliat metallic spring, r, placed lengthwise in fthe same, au'd'seetl'red"at"encheml by pins, rivets, or in any other proper proper 1 manner, but free lo play in the center. Upon the inner face, and at the center of the spring, is' placed a rubber cushion, s, upon the end t of which bears the inner end ot' a thu1nb-screw,o, of the sashframe. ly turning the thumb-screw e to the right or .left the rubber spring or cushion causes the metallic spring to be either thrown out or in, and thus brought td bear with more or less pressure upon the wiiidowfran1e,as may be desired, whereby the sash-frame, as moved up or down, caube're'tained and held at any height wished. A similar metallic spring is also inserted in the side zo ot' sashframef, which is operated upon the same as described for spring o, by the thumb-screw y thereof. could beinserted -in the opposite sides ot' their respect-ive sash-frames; but I deem one in each frame sufficient for the ordinary sizes thereof'.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The metallic'stri p i', inserted within the side of the sash-frames o, in combination with a thumb-screw, o, being arranged together and operating substantially as herein described and for the purpose specilied.
EZRA UALDERWOOD.
