G. E. POST. BLAGKSMITHS FORGE.
No. 519,072., Patented May 1, 1894.
NNNNNNNNNNNN THOGRAFHING cuMFANv.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. POST, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
BLACKSMITHS FORGE.
SPEGIFICATJQQK forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,072, dated May 1, 1894.
Application filed July 28,1893. Serial No. 481,698. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. Post, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blacksmiths Forges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a forge of greater convenience and efficiency and, more particularly, one that will admit of two fires being operated at one time by a single workman.
Other advantages and results are secured some of which will be hereinafter referred to in connection with the description of the working parts.
The invention consists in 'the improved forge and in the arrangements and combinations of parts, all substantially as be will hereinafter set forth and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the views, Figure 1 is a section of the device taken at line 0:. Fig. 2 is a plan view.
In said drawings, a indicates a stand or frame of any suitable material at the top of which is arranged a hearth, I), having a central opening beneath which is a fire box I), and, integral therewith, an ash pit and blast box (1. A tuyere plate, 0, separates the chamber in the fire box from that in the blast box and a valve, 0', closes the perforations in the tuyere-plate when it is desirable to deaden the fire in the box I) The valve, 0', may be raised or lowered or otherwise operated to close the air passage through the tuyere plate by means of a handled eccentric or cam, 0 and a connecting rod 0 in any usual manner. The blast box receives air under pressure from a blower, e, audthe latter is operated by motive mechanisms, f, of any suitable construction. 1
It has been the practice heretofore, to some extent, to employ, in 'connection with the forge, thus described, a supplementary brazing fire box, g, which received its supply of compressed or forced air from the blast box,
(1, through the air duct or pipe, g, the pipe however, in the former construction extending over the hearth and connecting with the tuyere plate, 0, so that, when the brazing box,
through the perforated walls of said blast box in any suitable and effective manner, and thus not interfering with the fire lying above the tuyere plate a. I prefer to cast the pipe, g, integral with the supplementary fire pot, said pot and pipe being cast in two sections, the joint being indicated in Fig. 2. The free extremity of the, pipe, g, is flanged, as atg and is bolted upon the outside face of the blast box. The pipe, g, is provided with a damper, g independent of the damper or valve for the tuyere plate 0, and thus the fire in the pot, g, may be controlled independently of that in the box I), as will be apparent. The
upper edge of the pot, g, is preferably provided with recesses, 9 to hold the parts being brazed in position, and with a tuyere plate. g separating the blast box, g, from the fire chamber 9 I am aware that modifications of constructions maybe made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. The'combination with a forge having a fire chamber and means for forcing air thereto, of a supplementary fire pot and a tube or duct connecting directly with said air-forcing means and receiving air directly therefrom, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a forge having a fire chamber and a blast chamber separated ICQ therefrom by a tuyere plate, of a supplementary fire pot and its duct having a connection with the blast chamber below said tuyere plate and independent thereof, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a forge having a frame a, hearth b, fire box I) blastbox d, tuyere plate a, blower e, motive mechanisms, f, and valve 0, of a supplementary fire pot, g, removably secured to said hearth and having a valved or dampered pipe, g, extending from the blast chamber thereof, beneath the hearth, to the blast box d, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with the forge and its blast mechanisms, of a supplemental brazing fire pot g, connected with said forge by a pipe formed integral with said fire pot, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with the forge having the blast chamber d, of a supplementary fire pot and a connecting pipe formed integral therewith, said pipe and pot being cast in sections, the fire pot being at one end of said pipe and a flange bolted to said blast chamber at the other, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of July, 1893.
