The mechanism of my improved machine is so timed that when lthe vertically slidable frame T, is moving up or,down,the crank pin F', of therack bar E', is' at the forward end of the cam slot k', of the crank arm C', by reason of which the said crank arm C', will have a 10st motion and the rack bar E', and the needle arm A', will be held stationary with respect to the slidable frame T, during the greater part of the upward and downward movements of the said frame.
Although the rack bar E', and the'loop taker h actuated thereby together with the needle arm A', and the needle carried thereby, do not move materially during themovements of the vertically slidable frame, yet when the said slidable frame is in its lower position, the said parts will be thrown into action and the needle will take through the material, and the loop taker will.take a loop from the needle; and after the slidable frame has attained its upper positionLthe needleand loop taker will again be thrown into action and theneedleavill pass over the material, and the loop taker will shed its first loop, and take another loop from the needlelis i lically sl'idable fra-me T at the lower end and will draw it through the first loop onthe loop that it has just shed, or in other-words a stitch vwill be formed while the frame T, is"

` X', indicates the former for the material, which is suitably connected to the bracket-m, and is designed to be adjusted vertically, so that 'the needle will properly take through the sweat band and the folded edge of the-hat. In operation the foldededge of the hat and the sweat band are placed within the former and between the clamping wheel L, 'and thefeed wheel K, and the' said clamping wheel is brought in` against the same by manipulating the cam lever M. The machine is then started, whenthe needle will take through the sweat band and the folded edge of the hat, and upon the receding stroke of the needle, the loop takerwilltake a loop from the needle.
The vertically slidable frame will then be -raised to its upper position, after which the needle will pass over the sweat band and the folded edge of the hat to finish the edge of the former; and upon the receding` stroke of the needle in its upper position, the loop taker will shed its first loop and will take a loop from the needle and draw it through the rst loop, and during the recedingfstroke of the needle while the frame T, is in its upper povsition, the feed wheel K, will be actuated io move the materials, which movement will draw the loop that has just beenshed tight of my machine, as I reserve the right to make such modifications asfairly fally within the Ascope of. my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. `In-a sewingmachine an organized, stitchf IOC forming mechanism, anda vertical -rectilinearly sliding frame carrying the same, the said mechanismbeing adapted to form a stitch at the termination of each downward and upward movement respectively Vof the frame, substantially as specified.
2. In a sewing m'achineaverticallyandlinearly reciprocating organized stitch-forming mechanism, comprising a rocking orreciprocatory needle and a loop-taker having `its point directed away from the needle and the path of the materials, and a suitable means for raising and lowering the same so that the needle will take alternately through the mastantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a sewing machine, thecombination with a vertical-rectilinearly sliding frame, and .an organized stitch forming mechanism carried thereby; of a cam arranged in a-plane IIO terial to be united and over the same, subparallelwith that of the sliding frame adapted means for rotating the cam, substantially as specified.
4. In a sewing machine, a rotary feed wheel adapted toimpinge upon the material operated upon, and a drive shaft, in combination with a' vertical, rectilinearly sliding frame, astitch Iforming mechanism carried by said frame,
and comprising a needle and a loop taker dito raise and'lower the same, and a suitable.;

5. In a sewing machine, the combination with a needle carrying arm lixed upon arock shaft and carrying the needle, acrank arm also fixed upon the rock shaft and carrying a cam,` and a suitable means for oscillating the crank arm, of a loop taker fixed on a rock shaft, a pinion also fixed on said rock shaft, and a rack bar engaging the said pinion and having a lug in engagement with the cam on the crank arm, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. v
G. In a sewing machine, substantially as described, the combination with a feed wheel mounted upon a vertical shaft, and a ratchet wheel also mounted on said shaft, of a drive shaft, a disk mounted on said shaft and having a cam groove, a lever fulcrumed at an intermediate point in its length and having a lug entering the cam groove of the disk on` the drive shaft, the longitudinally slotted Ilever F connected to the first named lever, a lever fnlcrumed adjacent to the vertical shaft and carrying a spring-pressed pawl engaging the ratchet Wheel, a pitman connected at one end to the lever carrying the pawl, and a screw adj ustably connecting the opposite end of said lever and the slotted lever F, su bstan- -tially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. In a sewing machine, a vertical rectilinearly sliding frame, a rocking or reci procatory needle carried by said frame, a rocking looptaker also carried by thevvertically sliding frame and d-irected away from the needle, and means for intermittently raising and lowering the vertically sliding frame in a. rectilinear plane, and for actuating the needle and the loop taker while ,the sliding frame is at rest in its upper and lowerpositions,substantially as specified.
