LIFE SAVING APPARATUS.

UNITED STATES PATENT IOFFICE.
LEWIS EDWIN PEASE, OF ABINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
LIFE-SAYING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,857, dated April 24,1894.
Application filed July 10,1893. Serial No. 480,042. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
B e it known that I, LEWIS EDWIN PEASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Abington, in the county of Plymouth and long been a desideratum with firemen, name-.
ly:'a rope constantly on hand in case of need, yet 1n no way impeding free action.
Figure 1 represents in elevation an inside view of a firemans coat provided with a coil.
of rope, the lining or straps used to secure the rope to the coat being removed in order to show the rope more clearly. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of Fig.1 on the line A B showing in section the coat, rope, and rope retaining lining or strap. Fig. 3 represents in elevation one side of the coil of rope and rope retaining strap. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the friction stop or guard shown in Fig. 1 Fig. 5 represents upon an enlarged scale in side elevation a piece of the rope provided with a guard stop formed out of the rope, and Fig. 6 is a front elevation of Fig. 5.
The firemans garment or coat 10, the inside of which is shown in Fig. 1, is of the ordinary material and of the usual style, and it is provided with the coil of rope 11 which is secured to the coat by means of the strap 12 as shown by Figs. 2 and 3 or by means of a lining, in such a manner, as to permit the coiled rope to be readily detached from the coat in case of need. One end of'the rope may be provided with the eye or ringlS which may be used to form a noose to facilirate, in case of necessity, the fastening of the rope. The rope is also provided with friction stops or guards 14. one of which is represented by Figs. 1 and4 to make the descent of a person using the rope easier, or
more effective, and for the same reason, if"
desired, the rope may be provided with the fixed stops or guards, as 15, one of which is shown in Figs. 5 and 6. A coil of rope one half inch in diameter applied to a coat as represented by Fig. 1 would be about one hundred and thirty feet long and would weigh about nine pounds. It will be observed that this weight, which is trifling, is borne mainly from the shoulders of the wearer and that in removing the rope the lining or straps only (not the coat) would be injured.
In the'use of my life saving apparatus the hands of the wearer will be free and the coil of'rope will always be at hand to be used to lower ones self and others and to throw to people who might otherwise jump to the ground.
It is designed that the coil of rope may be easily detached, commencing either at the top or bottom of the coil without even removing the coat. The stop guards may be used to make the descent of the user safe, unaccompanied by injurious results, especially to the hands.
The rope may be treated with any well known solution to render it fire proof.
For the purpose of permitting the easy bending of the coat when in use, the rope coils are placed in horizontal courses; but for some special uses it may be desirable to place the rope coils in vertical courses.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' 1. A life saving apparatus consisting of a firemans coat provided with acoil of rope which is secured to the coat by means of a lining or straps, as shown and described, so that the rope can be readily separated from the coat, in case of need, substantially as described.
2. A firemans coat provided with a detachable coil of rope secured to the inner back portion of the coat, said rope being provided with the stop guards, substantially as described.
3. In a life saving apparatus, the combination of a firemans coat and a coil of rope secured in a detachable manner thereto, said coils being disposed in horizontal courses, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribingwitnesses.
LEWIS EDWIN PEASE.
