APPARATUS FOR FORGING TIRES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,815, dated April 24:, 1894.

.To all whom it may concern:
Beit knownthat I, ISRAEL HOGELAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful'Improvement in Apparatus for Forging Metal Tires, of which the following is a specification. f
The object of my invention is to provide a novel apparatus for forging annular metal blanks into hanged tiresfor carwheels,where by great saving in time and handling, and consequent reduction in the expense of manufacture, shall be secured.
According to my improvement I provide a blank and fasten it in place in a holding die in a manner to leave the upper annular edge free to be heated, prior to bending it. To heat the blank, I provide an annular steel body adapted to fit upon the upper exposed edge of the blank, and which is encircled by an electric induction coil, whereby when the coil is charged from a suitable electric generator (dynamo) the annular body will be quickly heated to a high degree about its edge-portions, and with the heater in place, the heat is quickly conducted to the adjacent upper edge-portion of the blank. On then removing the annularelectric heater, a suitable die is applied to the exposed heated edge of the blank and force (such as that of a triphammer) is applied to the upper die to produce desired bending ofthe edge-portion of the blank. When one edge of theblank has been thus treated, the blank is removed and readjusted in a holding die to expose its opposite annular edge for similar treatment.
My improved apparatus is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of that portion of the apparatus carrying the holding dies for the two forging operations on the blank, which is shown adjusted in each die. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the upper die for the first forging operation, and Fig..3, a similar view of the upper die of the second forging operation. Fig. et is acrosssectional view of the annular electricheater. Figs. 5 and 6 are cross-sectional views respectively of my improved blank and of the tire forged therefrom.
A is the bed of the apparatus having the vertical openings A and A2.
B is a holding die formed of an annular metal (steel) body e. flanged at its base and fastened by bolts h at the flange-portion to the upper side of the bed A about the opening A and seated on the bed within the annular body is vthe core C, recessed about its periphery to correspond with the shape of and receive between it and the surrounding said annular body, the blank K, which is rounded at its opposite edges, respectively from the outer to the inner circumference and from the inner to the outer circumference, as indicated at and as. About the upper edge of the'core C is formed an offset c into which to bend the upper projecting edge portion of the blank K, as hereinafter described. Centrally from the lower side of the core C extends, in the opening A a stem g connected by a link m with one end of a lever n fulcrumed at t and projecting normally at its handle or pedal portion o above the plane of the bed A.
B is the second holding die formed of the annular metal (steel) body e flanged at its base and fastened by bolts b at the flangeportion to the upper side of the bed about the opening A2 and about a shoulder c2 at the upper end ofthe opening, the shoulder affording a seat for a movable head G having a central stem g extending downward in the opening A2, wherein it is connected by-a link m with one end of a lever n fulcrumed at t and extending as to its handle or pedal portion o like the lever n. About the inner upper edge of the annular body e of the die B is formed an offset c into which to bend outwardly, as hereinafter described, the edge-portion no of the annular blank after having undergone the first operation, in which condition it is indicated in the holding-die B in Fig. l, by the reference K. The core C of the die B" fits inside the annular body e to leave sufficient space between the two for the partly finished body K and has formed about its lower edge an offset c3, to receive the inward extending flange q formed on vthe blank K by the operation with the die B. I also provide the core C with a handle f.
D and D are the forging dies, each comn IOO prising a block having an upper head 71 against which to exert the blows of the forging implement (preferably a trip-ham mer, not shown, but which may involve any suitable or wellknown construction), and each being provided, also, with a swinging bail It by means of which to handle it, as through the medium of a suitable crane. In the base of the die D, which is recessed about its center, as shown, is formed, about the recess, a shallow offset d having the flange-portion d about its exterior; and in the base of the die D', which is also recessed about its center, is formed an offset d2 having the liange-portion (Z3 about its inner edge.
I is the electric heater comprising an annular steel body having wound about it an rinduction coil t', properly connected for charging with a dynamo (not shown).
The operation is as follows: The blank K is adjusted in the holding-die B in the position illustrated, when the heater I is imposed on its upper edge and the electric charge is passed through the coil t' and produces rapid heating of the annular body, the edges of which soon become reduced to a white heat; and the projecting portion of the blank is rapidly heated similarly by contact with the adjacent edge of the heater, whereupon the heater is removed and the die D is adjusted on the die B, fitting inside the annular body e. Then the trip-hammer is actuated to pound the die D and forge the blank to produce the iange q by bending the upper edge of the blank inward into the offset c. On raising the die D, the lever n is operated to force the core C out of the die B to permit withdrawal of the blank in the form in which it is shown in the die B. It is adjusted in the last-named holding die with the liange q engaged between the offset c2 about the base of the core C and the head G. On the then projecting annular edge of the blank K is thereupon imposed the heater I, which is caused, in the manner described, to heat that edge of the blank; when, upon removing the heater, the die D is lowered to bear against the blank and a triphammer is actuated to forge the edge-portion m into the outward-extending flange p by bending it into the offset c'. The result is a tire L, the flange p of which forms the Wheel-flange at the inner edge of the tread of the wheel, the flange q forming the outer abutment for the Wheel-center about which the tire is fitted. On thus finishing the forging operation, the lever it is operated to raise the head G and parts imposed upon it out of the die B' to permit the tire to be removed on withdrawing the core C.
By means of my improvement much time and handling are saved, the provision of the heater adapted to be removably applied to the tire-blank and heated while seated thereonto impart itsheat to the blank, rendering the operation obviously very rapid by avoiding the delay in time and inconvenience in handling incidental to the old method of inserting the blank into a iire for heating it and adjusting it into the dies while hot.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a tire-forging apparatus, the combination of a die for holding a tire-blank, a removable electric heater placed on the blank in the die, and a forging-die, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a tire-forging apparatus, the combination of a base A having seated thereon tire-blank holding-dies B and B', an electric heater I, comprising an annular metal body surrounded by an ind notion-coil t' and adapted to be heated by electricity, and to seat on the edge of a tire-blank, and forging-dies D and D for the respective holding-dies, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a tire-forging apparatus, the combination of a base A, having seated thereon tire-blank holdingdies B and B', formed, respectively, with stationary annular bodies e and c and removable cores C and C', an electric heater I, comprising an annular metal body surrounded by an ind notion-coil t' and adapted to be heated by electricity, and to seat on the edge of a tire-blank, and forgingdies D and D for the respective holdingdies, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a tire-forging apparatus, the combination of a base A having seated thereon tire-blank holding-dies B and B', the die B comprising a stationary annular body e and removable core C having an offset c, and the die B comprising a stationary annular' body c having an olfset c', a removable head G seated on said base and a removable core C having an offset e2, an electric heater I, and forging-dies D and D for the respective holdding-dies, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. A tire-forging apparatus comprising, in combination, a base A provided with openings A and A2 and having seated at the openings tire-blank holding-dies D and B', the die Bvcomprising a stationary annular body e and removable core C having an offset c and provided with a stem g having linked to it a lever n, and the die B comprising astationary annular body e having au oliset c", a removable head G provided with a stem g having linked to it a lever n and a removable core C provided with an olfsetci an electric heater I, and forging-dies D and D for the respect` ive holding-dies, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
