I NITED- STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
FRITZ DENINGER, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
COMBINED WALKING-STICK AND LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,590, dated April 24, 1894.
Application filed May 20, 1893. SerialNo. 474,969. (No model.)
To M5 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRITZ DENINGER, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Walking-Stick and Lamp,jf which the following is a specification.
The purpose of this invention is to provide in or near the handle of a walking stick or umbrella, a lamp with parts relating thereto in such a way that the appearance of the stick or stick of the umbrella is not altered when the lamp is not in use.
In the annexed drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view of the stick closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same opened for use of the lamp, and Fig. 3 is a section of the hood on line 3. 3. Fig. 1.
The upper part A of the stick is hollow and open below and it is made to screw or otherwise attach itself securely to the lower part B which is hollow so far as is necessary to receive within it the container 0 of a lamp in which the inflammable liquid fuel for supply of the Wick a is placed. This lamp container 0 is prolonged upward above the burner a in the form of a semicylindrical hood or shield b which again becomes annular at e at its upper end, and is provided just .under the annular part c with a slot (1.
The upper part of the stick, A, is divided into the chamber 0 open below, the chamber 15 above the former and the chamber 9 in the knob or handle. The chamber 0 slides upon the hood e, b and is provided in its wall with a pin f projecting inward and adapted 'to be passed into the slot 01 and so maintain the upper part of the stick A raised as in Fig. 2 when the lamp is to be lighted. Access is had to the chamber g by unscrewing the cap h, it may serve as a receptacle for a looking glass or any useful article. Access is had to the chamber t by hinging the upper part of the part A as at t and fastening it by a spring catch as at 15 The chamber t may serve to receive matches.
The closing cap of the container 0 through which the wick a passes, which cap is the same as the burner a, or forms, or is provided with a suitable burner or wick tube according to the nature of the lamp, may be made conical as shown so that when the stick is held upside down, as would be often the case with an umbrella, the cap a acts as a conical valve would do and closes the container preventing outlet of any liquid therefrom.
I claim as my invention An umbrella or walking stick consisting of two separable parts A B, a container C in part B, a cap a to said container adapted to close the same when reversed, a hood b with annular end e and slot (1 adapted to act as guide for part A, a pin f on part A and chambers t and g therein as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have signed this specification in presence of two witnesses.
FRITZ DENINGER.
Witnesses:
JOSEPH Kora, CHAPMAN COLEMAN.
