THERMO-ELECTRIC GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent $0,518,5z42, dated April 17, 1894. Application filed April 28,1892 Renewed February 2, 1893 Again renewed October 6, 1893. Serial No. (N model) part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in thermo electric generators.
The object of the invention is to improve certain details in the arrangements, constructions and operation of certain parts whereby the durability and effectiveness of the apparatus is greatly increased and the utility ahd advantages thereof broadened.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide certain improvements in the construction and manufacture of thermo electric generators whereby a superior and more durable uni/chine it produced which will not be injured and soon worn out by the intense heat and the cold to which the machine is subjected.
llhcinvontion consists in ccrlain novel features of construction and in combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims, and the invention further consists in certain im proven ents'in the manufacture of thcrmo electric generators.
Referring to theaecompanying drawingsz- Figurei is a vertical sectional view of the completed apparatus. Fig. 2 isadetail view.
iieretofore thermoelectric generators have been constructed as upward extensions of a tire pot or heating means. The inner faces of the series of rings or sections composed of 111011110 couples were provided with a' tire proof corrugated coating to withstand the in tense heat; the outer face of the pile having been coated with water proof material, such as paint and surrounded by a water jacket. 13y practical experience it has been found that a'nlerewater proof paint in the present state of the art will not sniiice for the oute far as possible all defects in construction and operation of -the thermo electric generator as above GOSOI'LPGG.
The pile is built up of a series of rings or sections a. Each section is composed of a series of thermo couples connected together in any suitable manner. as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. The various sections are suitably connected to connect the entire pile in the circuit, and b 11, indicate the binding posts connected, respectively, preferably, by insulated wires 1) with opposite'poles of the'pile.
In carrying outthe present invention a. pile is formed of the scctionsof couples separated by suitable insulating material 0. The sections are suitably held together and the outer and inner faces thereof are coated with cemout or fire clay or other suitable refractory material (2, and baked hard. The pile is then like a hard stone structure. The ends and outer face of the cylinder-are then preferably smoothed off and treated with some suitable substance, such as plumbago, and the open ends of the structure are temporarilyelosed and the exterior and ends of the same are coated with a metaljacket e,byelcctro platin". The metal jacket e, is preferably confined to the exterior and ends of the pile, but if desirablc the entire pile or structure can be coated with metal. While electroplating at present appears to be the most. practiealway of providing the metal jacket still it is obvious that a thin sheet metal jacket might be wrapped around the outer wall and the edges soldered, brazed or otherwise fastened and the ends headed over. If a Very close fit is desired the metal jacket can be placed on while the cement or clay is yet soft.
To render the cement or refractory coating impervious to moisture it is coated with wax or suitable varnish. This non conducting surface is rendered a conductor by the plumlHtL'O coating.
ff indicate the llanged end. pieces, rings or heads between which and the ends of the pile the rubber gaskets or rings g, are clamped.
IOU
The fire pot h, at its lower end tits the flange of the lower end 'piecef, and is preferably provided with supports .01 stand ards. The upper end of the pile is provided with the hood a, mounted. on the upper end piece f". The outer jacket j, forms a water space around the pile and is fitted in and clamped between the end pieces ff, and the two end pieces sndouter jacket are clamped in position by the bolts is, passing through the end pieces and water space, whereby all the parts are clamped together Z, indicates the deflectors suspended inthe upper part of the pile to distribute the heat.
m, m indicate the inlet. and outlet pipes through the opposite end pieces.
It is evident that various changes might be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise construction here disclosed.
l'iaving; thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The herein described mode of GODS-F1101:- ing thermo electric generators which consists in com: cting and arranging the thermo couples to form the pile, coating the same with fire proof material, such as cement or clay, and then hardening or baking the same, and then placing a metallic jacket or coat-0n the pile by electro plating or other means on said fire proof coating, substantially as described The thermoelectric pile having the ends of the couples coated with hardened fire proof material and provided with 2. metal jacket or coating, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A thcrmo electric the open pile arranged to be interiorly heated, the outer face thereof being coated with hardof the pile generator comprisingened cement, clayor the like rendered Water an external metallic jacket, substantially as I described. I
5. In combination, a therino pile coated with hardened fire proof materiel, as clay or other substance, an exterior metal jacket extending over the ends thereof, a'water jacket around the pile, end pieces, packing between the end pieces and ends of the pile, and means for holding the end pieces together, substantially as. described.
6. 111 n thermo electric generator, the combination of the open rigid pile, coated with refractory material the annular end pieces onthe ends of the same, the Water jacket clamped. between said end pieces, and forming nwater space around the outer surface of the pile the bolts uniting the same, the fire pot attached to the lower end piece and the hood attached to the upper end piece, substantially as described.
7. A thermoelectric pile having the closely fitted metallic jacket forming its outer surface, as and for the purpose set forth.
8. A thcrmo electric pile having its outer surface provided with a closely fitted metallic jacket, and refractory material between said jacket and the ends of the thermo electric elements, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own! amx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
