DEVICE FOR MARKING BALK-LINES ON BILLIARD-TABLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,450, dated April 1'7, 1894.

l 3e it known that I, STEPHEN S. HARMAN,a citlzen of the United States, residing at New York, county and State of New York, have 1nve nted a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Marking Balk-Lines on Billiard- Tables, of which the following is a full and clear description, enabling others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make the same.

My invention relates to billiard tables.

Its object is to provide a means whereby the line or lines marked on the surface of a b lliard table when a balk line game is played to be so marked as to be exactly and rapidly made. This end I obtain by means of the device shown in the accompanying drawings in which like letters refer to like parts in each.

In the drawings A is the device.

A are the rollers or wheels which come in contact with the plane of the table.

A are the wheels which come in contact with the cushion.

A are the wheels which come in contact with the edge of the table.

a. are the nuts on shanks of the wheels A, A and A i a are slots in the frame A. to admit of the adjusting of the shank of the wheel A a are rubber bands on the perimeters of the wheels.

B. is the table.

B is the frame of the table.

O is the handle to operate the device.

0' is a stop on the device.

D is the chalk holder.

D are holes with markings to indicate the distance of the marking point from the cushion.

d is the chalk point.

The operation of this device is as followsz- When a balk line game is about to be played,

the device is placed upon a table as shown in Fig. 1, the wheels A that come in contact with the cushion h are grooved preferably on their perimeter so that the groove will fit on the edge of the cushion. These wheels may also be arranged so that a small spiral spring may be placed in the slot, a or they may be arranged as shown in drawings secured in position .by the nut a, or by any other means to eifect the purpose. The wheels A and A are preferably tired by a rubber tire to prevent them scratching the table. When the device is secured to the frame of the table as above a chalk holder D or any other marking device is located in one of the holes, D, this holder is adjustable and the holes are arranged to allow of the balk line beinglocated at any point desired from the cushion, the wheels, A sustain the device so that the marking point (1, does not press too hard against the table Bthe handle 0 is more firmly grasped and by means of it, the device is passed along the edge of the table B, as it passes along the chalk point 01, leaves a line at the desired point marked on the cloth of the table-when the corner of the table is reached the stop 0 comes in contact with the cushion and prevents the device from moving farther. It is then lifted up, replaced, and moved on in the direction shown by dotted lines. In this manner the four sides of the table are marked off in an accurate manner. When this is done the game proceeds. If, during the game, the lines become obliterated as is usually the case, the device may be placed on the table and the lines renewed exactly as they were first made.

The device may be made of wood or any other desirable material.

The outer wheels A may be dispensed with, but they add to the steadiness of the device, and are only dispensed with as a matter of economy.

In combination with a billiard table the balk line marker herein described,whichconsists of the frame A, supported upon the able holder D, and stop 0', as herein described and set forth.
