SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 51 8,339, dated April 17, 1894. Application filed December 29, 1891. Renewed March 2, 1894. Serial No. 502,144. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RODERIC L. BENT, of Liardner, in the county of Worcester and State u Massachusetts, have invented a new and ,gieful Improvement in Chair-Seats, of which the following, taken in connection with the ?accompanying drawings, is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a complete portable upholstered seat, finished ion its edges and upper surface ready to be iapplied by nailing to a finished chair frame. My improved seat comprises a suitable base, ia cushion or body of yielding material resting thereon, and a top or covering of ornamental or finishing fabric extending over the yielding material and turned under the edges of the base, to the upper and lower margins of which such fabric is secured.

In its best form my seat has a leather or plush top and a semi-rigid base of three-ply wood veneer, which is light and somewhat yielding though stiff enough to retain its flat character undercontinued use, and its covered margin is readily penetrated by the gilt nails "which secure the seat to the frame. The edges of the covering material being turned down around the edges of the base and glued fast, above and below them, a perfect finish is gained without gimp or other binding, and without liability of raveling.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my portable upholstered seats complete, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section at one edge thereof.

The base a is represented, in Fig. 2, as formed of three-ply veneer, which is for various reasons preferable, having the desired stiffness and lightness without liability to split or sag or to turn up or ravel at the edges. The upholstering is attached to this base, and consists of the body I), of curled hair or other yielding filling material resting on the base, and the leather, plush or equivalent finishing covering 0, extending over the filling and inclosing the edges of the base, to the upper and lower surfaces of which it is made fast by glue. There is a projecting margin 01 all around the seat where the edge of the base extends bei yond the yielding filling b and is bound or inclosed and concealed by the edges of the covering c. This margin is left free from the filling in order to receive the nails 6 which socure the seat to the frame f as indicated in Fig. 2. The fabric is first glued to the upper and lower surfaces of the margin of the base and held by a clamp or form until the glue has become set. The nails pass twice through the fabric and hold the parts securely, and n gimp binding is required. 1

I disclaim a seat in which the covering does not thus extend over and conceal the edges of the base. Examples of such disclaimed construction are shown in the United States Patents No. 83,541, dated October 27, 1868, and No. 389,481, dated September 11, 1888, and in the British Patent No. 7,680 of the year 1886.

I claim as my invention- 1. A portable seat for chairs, consisting of a base of veneer of the general form of the seat, a covering of leather or fabric having its edges overlapping the base piece and glued to both surfaces of said base near the edges thereof, and a filling of yielding material between the base and cover inside the glued margin, substantially as described.

2. An upholstered seat consisting of a base of veneer, a covering of flexible material extending over said base and overlapping the edges on all sides, and glued to the upper and lower surfaces of said base near the margin thereof, and the filling inside said margin, combined with the support and the nails or securing devices passing through the fabric, the base,and the inturned edge of the covering beneath the base and into the support, substantially as described.

Bent, of Gardner, Massachusetts, for an improvement in Chair-Seats, was erroneously Written and printed Boston, Massachusetts; that said. residence should have been written and printed South Gardner, Massachusetts; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
