Description
l (N0 Model.) l y v 'A M. G. FARNUMV.
OVEN.
Patented Apr.' 10, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-ICE.
MYRA c. FARNUM, on PORT JERvIs, NEW YORK.
OVEN.
SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,057, dated April 10, 18,94. Application tiled April 22, 1893. Serial No. 471.524. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that .I, MYRA C. FARNUM, of Port Jervis, in the county of Orange and State y of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Oven-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to voven doors so arranged that through an aperture covered by a door of a transparent substance the contents of the oven may be inspected without opening the oven doorproper, that by opening the transparent door the loven may be gradually cooled without opening the oven door proper and that by opening the transparent door the contents ot' the oven may be moved or turned.
The invention also relates to transparent doors infoven doors, covered by a slide or door of iron, steel, or other metallic substance adapted to cover the transparent door and protect it from injury and to darken the interiorof the oven when it is required or de sired to do so.
My invention to obtain thesev ends consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
In the accompanying drawing, A. represents an ordinary oven door embodying my invention.
B, C, D,`and E, represent an aperture in lthe oven door. closed by the hinged door of mica F.
G and .H are hinges which may be of. any
vstyle suited to the stove.
I is a folding handle by which the door may be opened.
J, K, L, and M represent the .position occupied by the slide when partially drawn from the transparent door. The slide is held in position by clamps or sockets at J', K', L', and M.
The transparent door may also be constructed so as to turn on aswivel or pivot.
It will readily be seen that by means of this improvement the interior of an oven can be easilyinspected at all times without opening the oven door proper, which is detrimental to successful cooking anddbaking, that by the opening of the transparent door the oven can be gradually cooled and that by means of this door the contents of the ovenmay be moved or turned without the loss of heat which results from opening the oven door proper for that purpose and that the person moving or turning the contents of an oven provided with this door is protected from the steam and heated air engendered in the process of cooking and which always are emitted in large quan tities upon the opening of the oven door proper.
f I am aware that a transparent plate has been secured in a stove or oven door by means of a marginal frame formed to clamp said plate against a seat on the door, the plate be` ing loosened both from the door and from the frame when the latter is detached from the door; and -thata glass plate has been secured wholly to a frame adapted to be detachably connected to an oven door; but I am not aware that a patent has ever been secured upon a transparent door covering an aperture in an oven door, and so arranged that it can be opened at will.
The convenience and utilityof a transparent door which can be opened have been set forth heretofore. v
I claim, therefore- 1. The combination as applied to the door of an oven, of the door A. with a supplemental door F. of mica, glass, or other-transparent substance, covering the aperture B, C, D, E- hinged to the main door A. vwith the hinges G. H. and protected by the metallic slide orv cover J K, L, M, operating in the manner described to obtain-the results indicated.
2. The combination as applied to the door of an oven, of the door A. with a supplemental door F. of mica, glass, or other transparent substance, covering the aperture B, C, D, E,- hinged to the main door A.xwith the hinges G. H. and protected by the metallic slide or cover J, K, L, M, held in place by the guides J K', and L', M', all substantially as set forth for the purpose specied.
E. P. FARNUM, WM. H. CRANE.
