G. M. PATTON. ANCHOR FOR SHEET METAL ROOFING.
" NITED ATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE M. PATTON, OF CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN KARRER, OF SAME PLACE.
ANCHOR FOR SHEET-METAL ROOFING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 517,963, dated April 10, 1894.
Application filed December 16, 1893. Serial No. 493,878- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. PATTON, a citizen .of the United States, and a resident of Canton, countyofStark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Anchors for Sheet-Metal Roofing, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sheet metal roofing, and consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1, of the accompanying drawings is a view in perspective of a fragment of roofing illustrating my invention. Fig. 2, is a similar view showing the flanges of the sheets secured together and the anchor in position; Fig. 3, a similar view showing the higher flange turned over the lower one; Fig. 4, a similar view of a fragment of sheeting showing the wide higher flange. Fig. 5, is a perspective of the anchor. Fig. 6, is a similar view of a fragment of sheeting showing the narrow lower flange.
In constructing the roof,-referring to Fig. 1, A represents the board work or sheeting; beginning at the right hand side of the roof, the metal sheet B with its narrow flanged up portion a is placed on the board sheeting, and an anchor as 0, shown in Fig. 5, is provided to hold the narrow flanged side of the sheet B to the sheeting, and is of the form shown, having a vertical portion I) turned over on its self, and formed into a hook c to receive the upper edge of the flange a, a horizontal portion d, and a vertical nail portion 6, the horizontal portion forming a driving head for the nail at a distance from the upper portion 19, to allow of the free use of a driving hammer. To provide against undue enlargement of the seam, the upper portion of the anchor is made flat and thin as shown.
The anchors described are placed at desired intervals along the flange a, the nail portion driven into the sheeting A, and the hook over the flange 0; as shown in Fig. 1, by
which the sheet is secured to the building. Sheet D having a flanged portion h, one fourth of an inch wider than the flange a or sheet 13, is placed on the sheeting with flange h resting against the anchors and flange a. When in this position, small apertures is in pairs are provided, through both flanges at desired intervals, at the edge of flange a as shown, into which is placed a staple m, the
claim is 1. As an improved article of manufacture a sheet metal roof anchor consisting of a single bar having a hooked upper end a laterally extended intermediate portion and a pointed lower end, substantially as herein described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a sheet metal anchor consisting of a single bar having a flat upper hooked end, a flat laterally projected intermediate portion, and a pointed lower end, substantially as herein described.
3. In combination, the sheets B and D having upturned flanges of difierent widths, an anchor, consisting of a single bar of metal having a hooked upper end to receive the narrow flange, a laterally extended intermediate portion underlying the adjacent sheet, and a pointed lower end to engage the timber, substantially as herein described.
.In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of November, A. D.
